Man was it hard.... very hard. I've been at my company for 10 years. I first had to sit the 4 Presidents down and then my entire department. It was sort of emotional.
Anyone left a company after so long? Does it get easier as the 2 weeks comes to a close?
Lata,
Brian

I've left after 5 years. Going on 7 now, and for the right reasons i'm sure I would leave. I know I would be supported by the people here as well. Are you going to get a life back? I've been living about 5 miles from you for 7 or 8 months now and have yet to see you.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
I left a job after 15 years. The initial emotion for me was two fold, one - extreme releif of severe stress, two - it's kinda like you are leaving a part of you and your life behind, don't forget you went there everyday for many many years. Also after so many years at one place, you really are entering the world of the unknown, the grass may or may not be greener, whats worse the evil you know or the evil not yet known....eh..enough cliche's.....
Ya, it's emotional, and yeah, it gets better as the two weeks get closer.
I left where I worked for 6 years, was gone 6 months and I got home sick and went back, well that and they made me a really good offer..![]()
I leave where I'm working every few months or so. It's cool, I have employment ADD, I'd get bored if I didn't.
It is an emotional time - and the emotion depends on why you're leaving.
If you just can't get out of the car in the morning and face that group of morons who make the monkey shit fights at the zoo look organized - then you're riding a high for the next two weeks.
If you have taken anything personal into work - start taking it home now. Don't wait until the last day. Congratulations and good luck with the new job...

Told the head boss this morning. He's currently formulating a game plan of who is going to take over bottling with my boss, his partner. I told them two weeks, they wanted more, much more. But I explained that if we closed on the house in time, they would of had nearly a month's notice. I couldn't risk loosing our mortgage because I gave my notice at work when they call to verify employment.
Should be an interesting two weeks. I hope my coworkers take it well, they will be hurt more than anyone else.

With my Sterling personality I was usually walked to the door
I usually do ask if they NEED the whole 2 weeks if not
SEE YA
Business relationships are all bullshit foisted by the company to get you to stay for less money then the outside.
If your friends on the outside you should remain friends on the outside.
Glen Beck is John the Baptist
The problem was all the responsibilities I have/had that they never had a fill-in person for. In two years, I missed 1 bottling day ever, and that was with a month's notice to go to Deal's Gap.

Clayton, what will you be doing now for work?
I just hate to put them in a sticky spot. We've have a good relationship and I have no regrets. I want to leave them in the best situation I can given the circumstances.

We were told two weeks ago that we could no longer get free beer (well, a 12 pack a week). So what does it matter?
Besides, I can't drink beer anymore for the most part. Kills the blood sugar situation.
Biggity, I'll be the network manager at a private academic institution.

Where are you going? What are you doing?

I'm going to keep the name of the place to myself for a few days for my own reasons. I'll let you guys know soon enough.
I'll be doing the majority of the server, network and admin work for the school. My big projects will be virtualization using MS Virtual Server. I'll also be admin'ing the MS SQL server, Exchange server and all other network services.
It'll be good to get back into what my degree is in. They will be paying for me to get my MCSE (shoulda done it a long time ago) and possibly Master's. Benefits package rocks, free lunch every single day at the VERY good cafeteria (think rich kids, no crappy food here). More vacation (hello trackdays!!!), personal time and no being on call at all. Plus it's 40 hours instead of the 45 I was doing here, either 8-4 or 9-5.
It was an easy decision for me. I wasn't searching for a job at all, just ran across it and things moved quickly. I will probably keep doing all the IT work at the brewery as a courtesy.

Just spoke with my boss, he's being pretty much awesome about the whole thing. I'm smiling and so is he. Life is good.

Hey, that is quite already Iglu. It's a community and we all can share.
As for me... I've been an Art Director / Product Developer for 6 years at a Sports Licensed Headwear Manufacturer. I was a part time employee 10 years ago and quit school (MassArt) to work fulltime back in 1997. My design skills flourished many accounts and helped grow the company from 10 to 40 million in the first two years. My primary account grew from 2 to 20 million / yr in the first year and much of that landed me the opportunity to be Art Director a few years later. My boss (at the time) thought I had the "right stuff" and promoted me when he left the company. I had a few rough years at the beginning, but pulled through. My company now sits at 140 million in annual sales and what was once a 2 person art department is now a 16 person, 2-tier creative team. Yes, I built it all, but it's time for me to bow out.
So the question is, "Where do I go from here?"
Well, surprisingly I'm taking a job at a very young company. My position is Retail Marketing Manager / Art Director. The company is now beginning its move towards retail and it needs someone to make its product marketable. My plan is to completely "makeover" the product, it's packaging, and the marketing game plan. I'll be thinking strategically and working towards creating brand awareness and consumer loyalty. It's a position that will allow me to think beyond just the product and I'm hoping to learn how to run a small business..... one day I would like to have my own. On top of all that, it's less than 1/3 of the commute.
Brian
PS. Good Luck with your new adventure Iglu!!
