A friend of mine bought a 1970’s Econoline. It was the classic van of the day, complete with shag carpeting and solid rear doors.

He put a bumper sticker on it that said, “Don’t Laugh: your daughter may be inside.” Opined that was a colossally bad idea.

The next time I saw it: no decal. Why? He got stopped by police 10 times in seven days....

Tinted the back and side windows of mine so the creeper quotient has increased.

At the risk of throwing the thread a bit OT, figured I would weigh in with the way I went after a LOT of van hunting. At the concern of enough amenities when we go on the road full time with a sprinter build, I ended up with an alternative at a deal I just couldn't pass up that I've been really interested in for a while: the classic GMC motorhome. This one is a 26' (they do come in 23' which I wanted, but more rare - really only a few feet longer than some vans!).

This is a '76 with a '72 455 toronado engine in it. Drives along the road pretty smooth and not overly huge like modern class A's. Excited for our fun bus adventures after getting some things sorted the next few months.

that GMC reminds me of the van from the movie Stripes. Definitely interested in how it works out. I've always wanted something like that but the age would worry me.

That's why the vanity plate has "EM50" in it, it is that model! Ha. Re: age - absolutely would have the same concerns about any other RV even 15+ years old. Fortunately these GMCs have an unreal cult following, active shops, plentiful parts and tons of info available.

This one is in fairly excellent condition with all systems operational and a lot of functional upgrades by active owners over the past 10 years. And an engine and transmission rebuild 20k miles ago. Sure, it needs bits here and there as it's a '76 but for what I'm into it at purchase price I'm fine with dedicating what I expected to be the balance of just a down payment on a new build to be my fixes and upgrade budget.

Also, true, I guess plenty of peeps call these vans because of the form factor.

Does it come with it's own tanker? A 455 lugging around 12K+ pounds must be pinned quite often I would think!

Do you notice the FWD? Traction loss on hills as the weight goes rear kind of thing?

I think that engine puts out 350+ HP? Test driving up the 101 got it up to mid 70's pretty damn quick. I don't know about pinned but the joke is that this is a hotrod with plumbing.

I've only gotten about 10 miles behind the wheel so far since the sale was close by where I'm parking. The previous owner said he'd only ever experienced something like traction loss on a crazy grade hill near SF that probably "shouldn't really exist." I'll be doing work on it over the next month with a few shakedown drives, but I'll be hitting a steep grade up the 5 by Bakersfield to get out to a track day for Memorial day weekend. Will be sure to report back then!

Saw one of those GM motor homes in 1975 at Steamboat Springs, CO. With tire chains!

But since Sprinters have left the building, we saw this RV in VT in 2014.

Having a solid T1N means being a rust hunter. A guy on the FB Sprinter group swears by the MasterCoat Primer/Sealer, which was developed to protect bridges. He was a vintage VW restorer.

    Here’s a salt immersion test.

Only have some surface rust here and there, so cleaning all the surfaces then I’ll cover them with this stuff, sand and paint.

    Re: Sprinter build thread

Mundane job but had to cut out the horse mats we use to fit around the seat.

Made a template of the brackets,

Transferred to mat. Kept the cut out pieces to fill the holes with the seat out.

    All set.

Next projects are a second battery, battery isolator, outlets and wiring for a roof fan.

I like that flip up bed / pass through layout.

    Limited availability. US MSRP: $171,600.
Youch! Also not a crew seating config => no dice for families.

I was parked next to a brand new looking AWD Transit crew at the bike park couple weeks back. Had the gears rolling. Maybe in a year or two when the kids get older.

That Mercedez chassis with the bump outs in the Winnebago Revel make a great turn key solution with its raise and lower bed. I test drove one this past winter as I was thinking of it as a second vehicle and bug out surf house. But it drove like a work van with stuff rattling like crazy. I am told that most buyers put in solutions like felt stick ons in key areas to reduce the clatter. For $160K it should have had that you would think. The best feature of the Revel is the cassette toilet. What an elegant solution for dropping the kids off at the pool.

    Re: Sprinter build thread

I'm itching for a 4wd van now. Ugh. No real reason, other than on our last trip to Tahoe we really wanted to take the van, but there was a storm blowing in so we took the alltrack. $58k brand new and available in New England.

I do plan on adding the flares this summer while I'm back east. Ideally I can have them shipped right to a body shop so they are painted and ready to go when I get back. Any suggestions around Boston?

The more I use it, the more I really enjoy the set-up I have. A couple small things to fix this summer, but all in all its holding up really well. Recent trips have been Sequoia and Lassen. Sequoia was more of a vision quest...
At Lassen we had road bikes on one side of the garage and touring gear on the other. It was a prettttttty dope trip.
