Up for sale is my 1989 Kawasaki EX500 (Ninja). I bought it last year. It is clean, but not perfect. It is missing a few pieces of plastic and has excessive engine noise. First time riders might not want to pick this up unless you're down to do a bit of fixes to it before you ride. Im asking $500.00 for this bike as-is. LMK. I'm looking for a newer bike so if you want a trade, throw me an offer.
24,187 miles
Missing some plastic
Missing left mirror
Excessive engine noise
Title clean and in-hand

any idea what is wrong with the motor?
Other than the fact that its old, I'm not sure. I've only ridden it for 3k miles out of the 24k and it has never been a quiet motor for me. The lady who owned it before me let the bike sit for years before I got my hands on it, so a maintenance history is non-existant. All I can really tell you is that it'll start up and run just fine. It doesn't burn oil. There's no leaks. It gets great gas mileage. The noise is not so apparent in the mid to high rpm range. Sorry, if that didn't help.

Ever done a valve adjustment on it? Based on the sound that's the first thing I would check, they sound way loose. Very simple to do on that motor as well.
See, I thought that same thing initially but I must admit that I don't have any super-helpful shop manual for this bike. What would be required? I have an overhead valve adjustment tool which I used on sport compacts BITD and some feeler gauges.
I'd be willing to adjust it up if it doesn't require too much hassle.

One of the easier bikes to work on. Very straight forward. The engine comes out in no time at all with a small amount of hand tools and knowledge.
Does this have shims or the screw type?

Screw type. Real simple on this bike.
Just "found" a Clymer manual for the bike...
1. don't the pistons have to be in TDC for proper adjustment (manual doesn't say)
2. how do you find TDC on a bike? (LoL, sorry I've never worked on bikes before.)
3. The manual says to remove the cylinder heads. Do I have to?
If I have to remove the cylinder head, buy a full gasket kit, or bend over backwards then I'll probably not make this adjustment.

Interested.

I have an engine with 10k on it for $200 if someone buys this... < how hard is it to swap motors, tools, time etc?
I might buy this depending on your answer. Thanks
Motor swap is also wicked easy on these bikes. The side of the frame unbolts for easy removal and it's light enough that you can just lift it out after taking all the components off.

1. Yes
2. put a screwdriver down the spark plug hole...and when the screwdriver reaches the max height you know you have tdc. BUT make sure that the cam lobe for that cylinder is facing away from the bucket.
3. No, you just have to remove the valve cover.
