I need a Seagate 60gb 2.5" ATA-6 hard drive to borrow for a day.
I'm fixing a laptop for a fellow NESR member, and his drive crashed. I would like to find someone with the same drive, so i can swap the boards & try to recover the data off his disk.
please keep this on topic.
If any IT guys have done this before, let me know if I need to be model specific as well.
You're going to try and swap the controller board for a hard drive and expect it to work?
I suppose it's doable, but I've never seen it done.
Make sure you post how it works.
yes, i've done it before. cant remember if they need to be model specific though. I know the controller board has to be the same drive (brand, size, etc).
there's also the freezer trick, where you put the drive in the freezer for about 10 mins. sometimes it will bring it back to life just long enough to get the data off it.
I dont believe either will work since I suspect disk damage. i've run out of options without going to a data recovery company, and I'd really like to help get his files.
I can't help, but if you ever figure out how to get data off a damaged drive, let me knowI've got one sitting on my shelf, waiting for it to not cost $2000 to recover...
I don't have any extra laptop drives kickin' around. Sorry man.
However, I have tried the freezer trick and it worked (on a desktop hard drive). I put the drive in an anti-static bag, wrapped it in paper towels and put it in the freezer overnight. The next day I got the machine ready with my handle usb > ide adapter all plugged in. I grabbed the drive from the freezer and plugged it in as fast as I can. You can't waste any time.
Hope that helps!
