SOLD
For sale is my Passport Escort 8500 X50 radar detector, with a RED led display. It works perfectly and is in excellent condition. Only blemishes are very light scuffs where the suction cup mounts to, and a single scratch on the bottom (both pictured). It has saved me countless times, I just don't really need it anymore considering most of my transportation is by bike now. I have to ship it considering I'm in Gettysburg, PA, but I'll be willing to do $150 shipped. I paid over $300 for it new, and it still practically is new. Paypal would be ideal, but I'll take a certified check if need be. Thanks all!
Also potentially looking to trade for a nice used watch, preferably a Movado.
not sure why the pictures showed up sideways...

How well does this work from under the rear seat on a motorcycle?
Thanks

Was going to use earphone jack to listen to it. Unfortunately I have a naked and I don't know where to put it. GLWS.
Wasn't kidding. Didn't know. Thanks.
Thanks. I'll look into this.
Updating this post so I don't mess up your thread (too late?) .

Yeah... it has to be in the radar gun's direct "line of fire".

There are handlebar mounts for detectors. I don't have any experience with them though.
Examples : http://www.rammount.com/NewProducts/...2/Default.aspx
And just so I'm not completely shitting all over your thread, if you'd do $120 shipped I'd be in for it. Anyone want to outbid me?

No worries, thank for the interest.
Really? I've picked up cops in Boxford through what seemed like 1/4 mile of twists, turns, and trees. I've found that various town cops leave their radars on all the time (Boxford included). When you find this out, it makes driving in certain towns much more "relaxing."
I'll let you know, let me keep this up for another week or so if you can wait. One on ebay identicle to mine just went for $198: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Escort-Passp...item1c27b2dc6e

The line of sight maybe true for laser but I would assume that radar signals are radio waves for which the positioning of the detector shouldn't matter. Maybe a mech engineering or physics major can tell me otherwise. Although I'm not sure if putting it under the seat dampens the signals to the point that it is too late to recover. Putting it under seat is so that I don't have it displayed for everyone to see (which would possibly piss cops off or make other folks follow the dude with the detector).
Laser is pin-point like you said. So much so that people say a car in front or next to you could get lasered and there may not be enough scatter to pick it up. The saying is that if your detector reads laser, pull over and prepare your story. I'm far from an expert on the matter and have no background in this field, but the radar is somewhat directional, and is not strong enough to be detected from within the cabin. You also want the earliest warning possible, so even a hint is important. If you are interested in hidden models, several companies make them, Escort included. They are typically much more expensive, like 2x to 3x more.
It was also a blue display, which commands a high resale, and is like $30 extra brand new. It's silly. I'm in no hurry, but the money's ready if/when you are![]()

What year did you buy it in?

Yeah, it'll bounce around & get through loose foliage (& get dispersed in the process), but my point is that the radar detector has to be mounted in a spot where it can "see" around itself to work well. I would be EXTREMELY surprised if the radar signal managed to get through or around any metal/plastic and to a detector mounted under a passenger seat.

Love mine, still use it. Mounting hardware + http://www.marcparnes.com/Visual_Alert.htm solves the on-bike issues.
Or one of the in-helmet HARD thingies from legalspeeding. I think Terry (Nhbusa) has one?

Pete, stop mucking up his for sale thread. Under the seat (a bit of plastic) should not hinder the effectiveness anymore than people mounting it out of sight on their dash in a car. In a car, you have glass, plastic, and a ton of metal. Do you mount your radar on the antennae of your car to get a position that is not obstructed by absolutely anything?
Manufacturers take some of this into consideration. Sure, they won't be as effective, but they will still be effective.
Oh well, free bump.

For anyone concerned with the date of manufacture/software, know that you can send it back to Escort for a 'tune-up' where they clean the internals, make sure the software is up to date and everything is in good working order.
I used to do this with my Escort 9500ix.
I've felt sort of naked ever since selling it... tempted to pick this up, but I've been really good (lucky?) without having RD.

No issues with mine. I can take a video of it plugged in tomorrow so that everyone can see that it's in good working order.
I guess I've been lucky too. I've found myself leaving it in the glove box more often. Ever since I got a bike, I've really had no desire to be an idiot in my car. Well, that and the fact that I drag race my car, so that in a way gets the stupidity out of my system too.
