i am not sure as i have never ridden one but a 50cc dirtbike on the street is a scary proposition. they cannot keep up with traffic and they are kind of small for an adult rider. The other issue is the MSO probably says "off-road" and while some people have plated motards with this designation it is up to the DMV as to weather or not they will register it. I can't begin to tell you the hassle i went through to register my 125cc scooter and it was previously registered in NH! there is also a medium speed motorcycle clause in the law that states that a vehicle that is identified as a motorcycle by the certificate of origin with a maximum speed of 40 mph or less but greater than 30mph (medium speed vehicle) can not be registered. Also if the MSO classifies it as a motorcycle you can have trouble registering it as a scooter/moped. Also to get the scooter registration sticker the bike cannot exceed 20mph! here are the restricitons for scooters:
- They cannot be operated at speeds greater than 20mph.
- Cannot be ridden on state highways or limited access roadways.
- Cannot be ridden after dark or before sunrise.
- Operators cannot carry passengers.
- Operators must be 16 years of age and have a valid driver's license or learner's permit.
- Operators must keep to the right side of public ways at all times, including when passing a motor vehicle.
- Operators must use the proper electronic and hand signals before stopping or turning.
- Operators must wear an approved safety helmet.
- Operators are subject to all state traffic laws and regulations
*Mini-motorcycles and pocket bikes have been determined to be motorized scooters.
this just seems like it is more trouble than it is worth and your friend might just want to look into a 50cc scooter from the start and then swap the motor with a 150cc (yes it can be done quite easily as most of the chinese scooters use the same frame regardless of displacement from 50-150cc.)
I was even told that I would get shit for the REG on my Zuma cause its Tenically a Scooter not a Moped or motorized Bike.......so
but 40$ for 2 years is Kick ASS...............

This will be in NH so a lot of the red tape is eliminated. not sure what hoops will have to be jumped through but worst case he will register it as a motorcycle. hope it does not come to that cause it would be better/cheaper for him as a scooter.
NH you prob can plate it Nop prb......or Reg it as a farm vehicle............thats how some dude got his Banshee plated on stuntlife

Unfortunately, it fails to meet the cheap or safe for others to tool on with no experience guidelines.
It is FAST though!![]()
