truck = bad gas milage.. no way around it. Some are better than others but they all drink Heavy.
I have an 02 F250 Supercab Long Bed 4x4 XLT. I get 12 mpg. I get 12 downhill with a good tailwind. I get 12 towing 10 bikes on a trailer uphill in a hurricane.
I got it originally because I had a house in the city and no place to store a trailer. I keep telling myself I should now sell it because I have more property and live in the sticks now and get a Expedition and trailer. I just never seem to actually do it.

I guess its not in your price range, but Ill mention it anyway. I have an 04 4X4 Ranger XLT X-Cab 4.0L with 70K I am looking to sell. I haven't started seriously selling it yet as I want to go through it first to make sure everything is good on it before selling. Has a Linex spray bed liner, brush guard with KC lights, and 17"wheels with bfg mud terrains. Looking at about $10.5K. Like I said, I know its outta your price range but figured I'd mention it anyway.
I have a 2001 Ranger that does very well in many aspects of hauling.
With a fully loaded (2800 lbs est) enclosed trailer I have consistantly gotten 15 to 16 mpg. Even considering the previous owner's lack of maintenance and/ or parts replacement, I'm very pleased with this vehicle.
I have a '00 Tundra 4X4 extra cab with the 4.7 V8 I'd sell like to sell for $8500. I'm the second owner, the truck has 98k on it, and it's in good shape. Four new tires and new front calipers/rotors/pads. I know it's a little out of your price range, but I figured I'd put it out there.
It also has a cap with the Aprilia Racing sticker already on it, so you won't have to run out and buy any Aprilia Racing stickers or anything like that. I also have an extra Aprilia Racing sticker I could through in at no extra cost, you could put it on the rear window of the truck when the cap is off and your bike is in the back. You should think about it. Seriously
I can vouch for this truck... for a 2000 this thing is in INSANE condition... deep green paint, I didn't even see a scratch on it, very good shape. I drove it briefly and it runs very well. And Todd is a good guy to boot :drink:Quote:

but to the OP: if you're looking for small/cheap, get a compact truck like a ranger
if you're looking for a nice truck, just get a full size because they get only slightly worse gas mileage than a compact, and are 200% better (nicer interiors, limited slip diff, more power, etc.)
Suppose I should mention mine is 5 speed, and minimal options. Nothing but AC, really. Short bed, standard cab, crank windows, etc. The mileage amazes me though, for the way it's treated.
Choices choices! $8-10k is outta of my price range. I have some fairly serious financial responsibilities this fall to take care of, so I am looking at taking out a small loan then paying the rest with cash.
I go with what I know, and my father has been a Chevy man for a long time, they all have their issues, but its seems some of the guys I work with had some serious issues with there 98 and 99's.
I've been meaning to get down and see Ryan anyways, so maybe next week Ill take a road trip.

The good:
New BFG 31x10.50 all terrains
New brakes all around
New upper control arms and front end alignment
Spring shackles and hangers were replaced by the "spring and Chassis" place in Barre last fall. <--- Common Ranger problem.
Runs and drives good
2" receiver and trailer wiring.
The bad:
The passenger side has a few dents
There is an antifreeze smell from under the hood sometimes. Can't find a leak, never makes a puddle, and the exhaust doesn't smell like antifreeze so I guess I don't care. :dunno:
It will need a front drive shaft at some point. It squeaks a little when the hubs are locked in. I say it needs a driveshaft because the rear u-joint is not replaceable; it may only need the front u-joint. :dunno:
Bottom of the tailgate (underside you can only see when it's open) is pretty rusty.
.........ok...my turn.....i have an 02 Tundra...V6...regular cab.;;5 speed...no frills...it just hit 60k...i just had a new exhaust...new front brakes....new o2 (oxygen) sensors to pass emissions...its in pretty decent shape...gas mileage is decent...its been used as a truck so its not showroom condition....it has an aluminum cap.....$4400.00...if interested...lemmie know
