YZ450F might be too much, but how about the WR450?
european or japanese, I don't think that's the issue, I just get the feeling 2-smoke is not for corey...WR450F or 250F might be the right answer...milder than an MX bike, so lower maintenance and still plenty of power all over vs. 2-stroke
I still have this....it really is in like new condition, and I'd like to get it out of my shop space. It is a friend's bike, and I'm pretty sure he would take $2300-$2400. If your seriously interested and need me to, I can bring it to you to try out - I can also bring my KDX 220 2 smoke along for you to compare it to. Gone the next 2 weeks though working in Mississippi....

Hmm anyone have any reviews on the wr?Originally Posted by Svenny

The wr is a solid trail bike. You might be able to doctor the coo to get it street plated too.

dude, free test ride on a WR? that's the way to find out for sure!
and check with othersean...I know he's been through the WR lineup
I am caving after a week of trying to sort this bike out and bringing it to the dealership tomorrow...I will post up what the issue was when I get the bike back. I rather just pay to get it done right so I can ride with richie...I need me some MX in my life
i ended up getting my yz to start pretty good and run decent, i think its burning a little oil though so i am selling it but it kick starts within 3 kicks now and idles nice. The aftermarlet exhaust was a big issue so i got a stock pipe and then i ordered one of the fuel mixture scres off ebay that you can adjust by hand onstead of trying to use a screwdriver and within 5 minutes i had it running pretty good and kickistarting. I dont understand why they dont come with those adjustable screws from the factory.

I've been all over the place with different sized dirt rides in the past 5 years and after all my bike swapping I'm best on a YZ250F both in the woods and at Crow Hill or MX 101.
If I had it all to do over again , I would either take a an 09 or newer YZ250F or an 09 or 10 KX250F.
My extremely biased opinions of last few bikes are:
2000 YZ250 2T, great handling if you can keep the rear tire from spinning. Lots of fun and very exhausting for a mortal to ride fast.
2002 YZ125 2T, by far the fastest through the woods as long as I didn't climb behind a slow 450 woods bike. I felt like superman on this because I never got tired. I often came up short on several jumps at Crow hill that I should have made.
08 KTM 450 XCF (same as SX) best motor I've ever ridden as far for putting power down while fully hooked up and would climb anything any time. It felt really top heavy so I never carried any corner speed. All the lost corner speed adds up fast and I was slower in several places. I always pushed wide on the MX track and felt like I could high-side even though I never did.
09 KX250F (Squirrel's old bike)Great motor for only a 250F, pulled hard off the bottom and made all the jumps at Crow Hill that my YZ125 wouldn't. Pretty light feel and cornered well. Ran a little hot at slow speeds and fussy to start if it was really hot. (adjustable Fuel Screw?) ( I should have bought it)
09 YZ 250F my current ride. Feels almost as light as my 125 did. Very stable in chop and the suspension works in the woods once I soften it up. Works well at the MX track once I stiffen it up. Always hooked up and driving forward on corner exits. I could use a little more power in sand, it's perfect everywhere else. Valves never move. MUST have an adjustable fuel screw to get the most out of it as it changes with weather. had to raise the fork tubes 8mm to make the front bite.
I am late to the party but....sell the 250f, get a 250 2stroke and smile
Love my yz, BUT that said I also bought an rm 125 out here in CA and it has blown up twice as of last week. 125s are supposed to do that though :p A brand new motor internally (bottom end/top end/head recut) cost my under $400 bucks.

MX #505
So.... I've ridden the yz250F for a few months now, runs like a champ with that adjustable fuel screw in there, tons of power, turns easy, really an awesome bike...but it old and heavy. I got offered a 03yz125 in trade from a guy on craigslist, worth trading? I think ill end up on a newer kx250f or yz250f next season regardless but maybe have a 2 stroke and a 4?
Corey
If your under 180 LBS then a YZ125 is a lot of fun, especially if you ride fast trails that flow or Crow Hill. If you climb anything rocky or slick with a group of riders, it sucks. Don't get me wrong, I loved my YZ125, but the 250F will have 30% more torque climbing slowly.
you can never have too many dirt bikes
but you can't just say "trade for 03yz125...is it worth it"?
there's too much that can make that a ticking financial time bomb too...more info? pics?
and why do you even want to step up to a newer 250f? your bike runs fine and you just spent over a grand to buy it

It was an 03 with a top end done in the spring, aftermarket silencer, v force reeds etc... But within hours the kid already worked a different deal. I want a newer 250f for the weight, it's hard to control and handle on in whoops an stuff like that.

okay, if that's what ya want...but for a recreational trail rider on a budget, I think your bike will do just fine
it's going to be a lot of extra money just to be able to handle the bike on the whoops
and this is dirt bike - you'll get faster with technique rather than the kind of bike
