I'm the edge case with the kick starter. A mostly dead battery can have enough juice to run the EFI but not crank the engine. I encountered two yahoos in a rock garden and one of them stalled and couldn't get running again. He was E-start only and there was no feasible way to bump start where we were. I swapped the battery between his bike and mine which allowed him to start and I was able to kick start mine with his weak battery.
For an enduro bike where you may be stuck in the middle of nowhere, I like having the option of the kick starter. I'm heavier than the bike so the weight is negligible.

Gearing for MY on small 2 strokes has top speeds around 45. Not restricted in any way other than a close ratio gearbox

I think I'm right there with you. I've had bad luck with batteries and don't want to rely on one, especially because it'll sit for long periods of time.
Re: Care to school me on which 300 enduro to buy?
Sounds like you need to find a 2019 MY KTM 30xcw, Husky TE300s or gasgas EC300 with low hours.
Platable in Mass (assuming clean papers)
Push button and kick start
Fuel injected
Relatively affordable.
Very capable in stock form
Re: Care to school me on which 300 enduro to buy?
Can't help on the bike recommendation, BUT would carrying one of these resolve the "no kick start" problem and allow a wider range of bikes to select from?

If anyone has interest in a 2018 Beta 390 RR-S a friend is looking to sell his. I don't know pricing info but can get anyone interested in touch with the seller

Beta 200, i'm on my second, amazing NE bike ... you can check all your boxes of injection or not, kicker or not, streetable or not. doesn't have to be current model, my '19 f'in ripped. crazy torque and top speed for a little bike. it uses the 125 chassis so nice and compact but not so good if you're taller than 5'10" although the '20 and up chassis is a bit roomier off the floor. (i have a '22 right now)
Re: Care to school me on which 300 enduro to buy?
Can the current Beta 200 be (easily) plated?
Re: Care to school me on which 300 enduro to buy?
Pulled the trigger on that '19 300xcw today. Stoked!

New bike = required wheelie pic

Definitely! I stuffed it in the back of the garage when I got home and I'm trying not to think about it right now...I'm leaving on a ~10 day bike trip on my Tiger on Saturday that I'm scrambling to get ready for.

Re: Care to school me on which 300 enduro to buy?
I'm in! I forgot I signed up for a Meg's Braap clinic in September so I gotta put some hours on this thing before then.

No sir.
She has a clinic in Granville NY at Rada on NESRs property in early October and I usually wind up out there as support for her and Rada for the weekend. We met Meg's in 2018 in B.C. doing one of the Traction eRag trips and again in 2019 on another. She has been doing clinics at Rada's for a couple of years now. Good times.

Awesome. Yeah I'm looking forward to it. I've been riding dirt forever, but all self taught with tons of bad habits, so I'm looking forward to some more formal training.

yes, my '22 came with all the paperwork from the dealer needed to get a plate ... not sure if that's still the case for newer models.
Re: Care to school me on which 300 enduro to buy?
I believe XCW along with wide ratio transmission is non linkage rear suspension. An XC is linkage and more like the SX models. This is KTM anyway. I think XC went to spring forks in 2024 and TBI. XCW might have a bigger tank. For new ones I heard left over 250XCW had some good discounts but a lot of guys want XC.
