trickphoto, get a plate on that thing already

I took it for it's first ride yesterday (on the road though) and WOW what a difference over the 450 It's a torque monster for sure.
I did notice a little "surge" at a steady throttle though? I may have to look into some jetting or something.
Can't wait to try it out in the dirt...

I know I really really ned to plate it. I'm buying a house this summer, so my plans to motard and plate it are on the back burner for the moment. I just don't have the loot. I'm also a little concerned of tangling with the fuzz... The bike is a total hooligan bike. I can see my insurance going up within a few weeks of getting it plated

I re-jetted my 520 with an EMN needle and noticed a big difference. Smoother delivery through the whole range and a little more grunt in the middle (as if it needs it. the frickin thing power wheelies in 4th) Not sure my baseline jetting would work on the 525EXC, but it might not be too far off. I could dig it up for you if you want (I can't remember where I ended up...)

What size carb does your bike have? The 06 525 EXC has a 39 and the 06 525sx has a 41. The motor itself has the exact same specs as the sx which is pretty cool

Progress is a bit slow as far as getting it road worthy, I'm still waiting on my horn, turn signals and a LED flasher relay. It's registered and insured so I did take it for a little 20 mile rip on the roads the other day Waaaaaaaaaaay more torque than my 450, I think I'ma gonna have a bit more fun on this bike.

Another cool thing, I put the rear motard tire and rim on the bike to make sure everything still works with the newer bike and I found out I can use the same chain for both sets of wheels That alone will cut the wheel swap time down by at least 10 minutes... and make it a cleaner job.

When it's close to done, I'll litter this thread with pictures

My 02 has the 39mm keihin, so your bike's probably not too much different in terms of jetting. Of course you've got an extra 5 CC's, but also a slightly more restrictive exhaust... The two may even cancel eachother out in terms of jetting. I had a buddy start with my settings on an 02 EXC with good results. I dunno. It's not like the bike had jetting issues before. I just can't leave well enough alone. There was a tiny off-idle stumble, but who the hell rides at idle anyway? That ended up having less to do with jetting than it did with the accelerator pump squirting too much gas. Easy fix.

    That's a damn nice bike.
Nice that the motard setup just swaps over. Changing sprockets and rotors when you just wanna be riding sucks.

So, what the hell do you do for work, anyway?

What's your jetting combo then? I know I've already got the accelerator pump thing going on and it surges at steady throttle.

What do I do for work? Not as much as I used to

Yeah, man... Looks like you bust some ass. You've got some kick ass toys.

The accelerator pump is a pretty easy fix. You pull the carb and plastic cover... If you (gently) bend the forks that the spring-loaded actuator rests on, you can lessen the amount of time the pump "squirts." What you're after is just about 1 second of "squirt."

With the carb off and the float full of fuel, hold the slide up and use your other hand to go full-throttle. (just point the motor side of the carb away from you) It will squirt a stream of gas for a period of time (couple of seconds). Mine was way too long. Word on the street is that they were all way too long. Bending the forks that the actuator rests on essentially limits the travel of the diaphragm once the throttle is open (kinda hard to explain without a diagram). There was a decent write up on KTMtalk or ThumperTalk at one point... I think the called it the "AP mod" or something.

I'll see if I can dig up my jetting specs this weekend. I know it's an EMN needle, but I'll check my Pilot, main, Fuel Screw, etc.

Everytime I ride that bike I remind myself that I can never be without a big-bore 4stroke MX'er. There's just nothing else like it.
