Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
I'll keep my ears to the ground for a decent deal. That 250 xcfw seems alright, but it doesn't exactly rustle my jimmies. Probably do fine for me in reality.
Been for sale for a couple weeks now. Maybe it'll go from a decent deal to a steal in another couple.

Fuck the 606's. Ain't nobody going to really check if the tires are dot or not.
Get the paperwork, get the plate, forget the inspection intricacies.

One of these days I'm going to regret following your advice. Until then.
D606's for their pavement compatibility. Not because of some lawman. I'm sure their are others.
Alternative is 2 sets of hoops; one with your choice of woods tires and the other with stinko 705's or sumptin'.

2 sets of hoops: one set of woods tires, and a second set of woods tires.
Or in winter: a set of knobbies and a set of screws or spikes, interchange at will.

I'm not going to run it on the street enough to justify going down the 606-slip-and-slide-ride.

Dude, you get the plate first. You then have 7 days (or never) to go get an inspection sticker.
You either find some place friendly, or wing it. It's not like you:
A: will be shredding twisties with the bike like an asshole
B: will be doing anything more illegal than riding where you aren't supposed to be anyways
C: will be doing anything more conspicuous than already ridding a dirty on the street.

Eh, if you NEED a dot agressive tire they're as good as it gets. You can break every speed law with them too. They stick well enough in both disciplines to be valuable, again, if you must have a dot tire.

The XCFW 250 is sweet. Motor on mine is STONKIN for a 250. It's almost too much really.

Apples and oranges, so I'm led to believe. I've ridden an 08 250xcfw (same thing) and while it's certainly enough to move through the countryside, it's by no means stonkin.

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
By the looks of the HP figures, stock 2009 250 XCFW makes around 35hp, same as my old Cr125 did. I'm sure the curve is a LOT different, but that's at least a good idea of peak power.
-
Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
I think the newer ones like Pauls are much more potent. Unfortunately you don't want to pay for that. I also believe they require more revs to access that power. Fine in the woods/dirt. But not really a suitable for pavement play.
Re: Tires. My whole point was a compromise tire is good 'nuf for play yet won't melt when it touches pavement. Roland does shockingly well on the OE 70/30's that came on his CRF-L (I think they are GP22's) and then commutes and tours on the same damned tires! I am pretty sure the MT16 I have on the 200 right now would vanish if I so much as took the bike to town for pizza.

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
IIRC Paul's bike 6 year newer difference is ~10hp pursuant to the "dirtbike technology accelerates quite a bit"...his is a bit nutty, the '09 albeit sufficient, may not be crazy
that 250 is cherry, and everything you need for what you're doing...but I feel like at that price point you want 40-45hp
keep it as an option (maybe go look at it...free to check!) and keep looking for a 450-500ish
at 22 year vintage I'm sitting on 43(?) hp smoker, and I didn't feel an 06ish YZ250f was much of a wow factor...got a video drag racing and beating it somewhere

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
I am positive I won't be motarding anything like that 250 or a 200-300 two stroke. Streetability is just to get me from dirty place to dirty place.
-
Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
Then pick one:
Woodsy 250 4t - KTM XCF-W or EXC-F, CRF250x, WR250F
Woodsy 200-300 2t - KTM XC-W or EXC, KDX
Either will do. Go make it happen.

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
Kenda Trackmaster 2 in back is heavy as iron, wears like iron even on pavement, and does damn well in NE woods... just tossing that detail out there.
A KTM 300XC-W on pavement isn't horrible. Mine has woodsy gearing, will happily do superlegal speeds without winding out.

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
since 'dumb' was included in the title ... Caution, meet wind ... aka 2017 390 RR-S

Too many strokes.
300RR please
Oh, we were not talking about me again? My bad.

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
i know we're technically off topic but ... Beta has completely deleted their 'off-road' four stroke line ... they're ALL street legal now. uhh, huh. makes me almost... nahhh ;)

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
I was just sniffing around on that 390 last nite. Too bad beta's site is awful on a phone.
What's the cliffs?

i'm pissed i recommended the 300RR to my neighbor, now that he acquired one, i'm having trouble keeping up. it's provided a springboard to speed for him. effortless ride.

think Dirt Rider has the 390 on the cover, just got it last night... will try to find review link, prob easiest way to consume infos. of course my go-to parts peeps are saying it will take over the north east. EDIT: ...for the true off-road DS'er segment

I guess I fall into that segment.
