it's a long way off (sorta) but curious if they'll offer a carb retro-fit kit a lot of off-road riders just do not trust this kinda thing. direct inject included.

Unless they redesigned their tank, make a mental note that the fuel pump on FI KTM dirt bikes can't scavenge the last inch or so of fuel which can lead to operator thinking they can make it back to the parking lot or gas station when in fact they don't have a chance. Ask me how I know!

was there really ever a huge want for FI 2Ts though? it's been a cool tech rumor for a while now but i wonder how many riders feel they need it ... then again, maybe that's why Lectron carbs are flying off the shelves lately. (smoother, easier, less thirsty)

I anxiously await the extended range, but will miss being able to run sweet smelling castors.

My (first gen?) '12 EXC 4-stroke's efi has been problem free with minimal maintenance, so I have some trust that KTM has the 2-stroke application figured out.

You can't run castors with EFI?

I'm not sure an EFI 2t removes the need to run 2t oil..

Wouldn't a fi system allow for more tuning options with a power commander like setup?

I think it's more a question of how well the castor oil works with the pump / injector setup KTM is using. It isn't clear if they're going premix or separate oil injection?

I had read "no more premix", so presumably separate injection. Like my 2000 Aprilia RS125 had..

Injection would be cool. I still worry (way too much) about mixing.

That said, I saw the guys with the early electric start 300's and such struggle. So I do not fully share gregp's confidence that there will not be any issues.

Re: KTM fuel injected 2-strokes due in May

The 300's estart issues stem from the fact that estart was added on AFTER the motor was developed. It was never intended to be that way and the hack add on design has faults a plenty as a result. If the new motor is built from the ground up for estart and EFI it should have fewer teething issues.

KTM has also been testing EFI in house, with it nearly 'ready to go' for how many years now?

Yes, I was referring to the fact that normally, oil injection systems do not pump castors well, and I assume that they are not injecting premix.

Re: KTM fuel injected 2-strokes due in May

Guess I'm a dinosaur but I'm fine with a carb on my 2 stroke. Simple, light, cheap, powerful enough with a shitload to spare, and never failed me yet. Why would I want to change? Range or slightly more power at altitude? Neither of those have ever been a problem for me, especially since a group riding dirtbikes is somewhat limited in range by the shortest ranging bike anyway, and the range of this old bod in New England woods ain't running a carbureted tank dry anymore, anyway.

4 stroke street bikes are a different matter. Screw carbs on those, for a bunch of reasons.

Re: KTM fuel injected 2-strokes due in May

Curious if they are injecting the oil into the motor as well if they will have issues, that some older oil injected bikes had, with the oil injection stopping working, with no warning to the operator, and then lunching the motor because the rider went riding merrily along thinking the motor was being oiled properly but it wasn't?

Re: KTM fuel injected 2-strokes due in May

Most previous oil injection systems have been very reliable. The injection system on my 1974 Can Am is still working fine. Beta just reintroduced oil injection to the off road world just a year or 2 ago, but theirs is a much more finely tuned system, compared to older crank driven mechanical pumps.

I am curious to know if KTM is injecting premix. I doubt it, because mix ratio variation would screw up the injection settings. I am guessing that they will have a separate oil injection system, similar to Beta's.
