So I'm taking a bit of a gamble and buying a yz250 to run hodges dam area with. The bike is in New Jersey and the seller is trust worthy but has zero paperwork for the nearly 30 year old bike which I don't think is a big deal. It has however struck me as a potential issue when I go to try and get an ohv Sticker for it. I believe I can use the vin off it but I can't get a copy of the vin number to check if it's stolen until.i am down there dragging it out of the shed it is literally buried in. Normally I could care less about dirty bike vins but since I'm getting this to specifically operate in an ohv area I need to do this on the up.and up.
How often has and one had issues using just the vin number? I'm mostly worried about it not being excepted or worse, it's turns up to be stolen back in the 90s or something. The guy I'm getting it from was paralyzed in an accident a few months ago so he can't physically get to the bike to get the vin and his wife couldn't find it in the mess of his garage so I'm doing this on faith.
I think the tricky part is paying the tax on the bike in mass if you don’t register it.
Just follow these steps and you’ll be golden.

The folks in the Worcester ohv office were extremely helpful to talk to when I had questions on my 250 but it was already street plated.
as long as the VIN is correct, you'll be good. as mentioned, you'll need to pay tax when you register it, but otherwise should be a smooth process. agreed that the Worcester OHV office has been great for me as well.

How does the tax work on an out of state never registered bike? Is it just sales tax on some agreed value?
out of state doesn't matter, never registered doesn't matter. bill of sale price multiplied by .0625 is what you'll need to pay. you will be filling out an ST-6 form, see Part B:

Cool. Thanks. Is this one of those deals where you can write down a low sale price on the bill of sale and it actually works?
Probably. Certainly worth a try. I'd definitely lowball it but also be kinda reasonable.... 1000 bucks or something. I doubt they'll be checking market value.
I'll echo the comment regarding the Worcester office. They've been pleasant to work with. Have gone through the process with three different bikes over the past few years, including renewals and the ladies in the office are always cordial and the place is rarely busy like it is at the RMV.

be careful with the BOS pricing, if it looks bogus, they know it's bogus. i've heard of them looking up book value but never had that happen personally.

Well I was able to get the vin number and it checked out clean on the nicb database so that's a relief.
I've had the MA RMV look up "book value" -- they used NADA low value for tax value.
(One time at the Watertown RMV I was trying to register a BSA, they couldn't find it in any book, so I told them it was the same thing as Triumph, and somehow they went with that. That was the only good experience I ever had at Watertown, among many horrible experiences. I never go to Watertown anymore, instead I drive out Rt 2 to Leominster RMV, helpful staff there.)

And don't believe everything you think.
