It's Almost Time...

...to head out to the property & start dropping trees. My big goal this year is to finish widening the parking area I started, then stump it & get it graded. Then I gotta get the wood cut and outta there, then split & stacked. I basically did it myself last year with a little help here & there. Pulled about 6 cord outta there by the shortbed pick-up load. Had it all cut, split & stacked by about Mother's Day...

I'm hoping to get it done quickly enough that I have PLENTY of time to FINALLY start the trails. With almost 25 acres to work with, I plan to have quite the extensive layout over the next coupla years. I'm gonna start the trails with a perimeter trails, *just* wide enough for a quad...

If anyone can make it out to help with the parking area/trails, they'll have access to it as long as I'm around to ride with ya. It won't be for a coupla weeks anyway, and we could probably set ya up with a quad if the road's too shitty for the pick-up...

Looks like me & at least one buddy of mine are heading out there Saturday morning to start dropping trees to widen the parking area (and for firewood). I'm fairly confident that the truck WON'T make it down the road yet, so we're bringing the ute-quads. Depending on how long we spend felling, limbing scoring & cutting, I'd like to start at least marking the main trail...

I only want those with experience dropping trees to help with the felling. I think it's safe to assume we all know how incredibly dangerous that can be. But once they're down, help with the limbing, scoring, cutting & moving the logs (we score 'em about every 18" & cut 'em to either 54" or 72" depending on the diamter) will definitely move the process right along...

We're pretty serious about being safe out there, but we're not Nazis. We'll have plenty of adult beverages & smoking materials with us for some after work indulgence...

Yeah, not good for working out there this weekend. Unbelievably, the snow's still deeper than shit out there. No problems getting down there with the ute-quads, helluva time getting back up though...

Managed to drop only a coupla trees. The snow was knee deep, and it was just too risky - no real way to safely 'escape' if needed. And once the trees came down, they'd disappear into the snow. Nearly impossible to limb, score & buck...

Which is actually kinda good. These last coupla years, I may have been cutting on the 'wrong' lot. I mean, it's ours & all. But I think I may have THOUGHT I was cutting on one lot while I've actually been working the 'other' one. I'm gonna walk it off this coming weekend and measure it out. Luckily, I still have the landscape tape measure I stole from Randy...

Me & a buddy are heading out there again tomorrow morning (Saturday). I'm gonna walk off the two lots - snow depth permitting. I wanna be certain of the bounderies before we start blazing trails. There's a lot of hunter's tape out there and I gotta distinguish which flags are trails markers & which are bounderies...

If the snow's melted enough, I'll probably head out there again Sunday to drop some trees and get going again on that...

So, ummm...yeah. I was cutting on the wrong lot. Good news is it was still wunna our lots. But not the one I thought I was cutting the clearing on. I wanted to keep wunna the lots between us & the abutter so as not to disturb his baiting stations. Woops!

Sooo...I'll be starting from scratch this weekend. Starting a new clearing on what I now KNOW is the spot I wanna be clearing. Time permitting, I'm gonna put the cutting blade on the weed whacker and go knock down the scrub, small saplings & underbrush Friday. Then I'm heading out Sunday to start dropping, limbing, bucking & scoring my firewood...

In the following weekends, I'll be pulling my firewood out and marking trails. I'm hoping to be done with the firewood by the end of April - again, I split & stack it outta my truck so we don't end up with piles of wood all around our yard. Once I'm done with that, I'll start in on opening up the trails we're gonna mark out...
