TIP: First ride of the season, take it easy!

yikes, check out this guys first ride of the season! he was riding an '09 Husky TE250

YouTube - Rabbit Valley/McInnis Canyon Dirtbike Accitdent

Rim trail in McInnis Canyon/Rabbit Valley Colorado/Utah. My skid plate clipped a rock on the left side of the trail which then sent my wheels to the right where the cliff edge was only 10 feet to the right of the trail. I bailed as soon as I could, sliding off the bike, ending up just a few feet away from joining my bike over the edge.

The bike amazingly had only a broken clutch lever and a smashed left foot peg! The front forks were perfect, the plastics were perfect, the frame, exhaust, handlebars, seat everything was in great shape!!!

With all that space, I don't get why you would ride so close to the edge!

It adds excitement to the ride There are dropoffs like that at Hatfield & McCoy but plenty of trees to catch the bike (and rider) on the way down

That's what i was thinking, kinda boring trail but the dropoff added some excitement to it..tho as a rider, his get-off wasn't exactly the type of excitement i'd be looking for

Re: TIP: First ride of the season, take it easy!

hahaa. yeah, totally random get off!

he said it was on the way back from a day of riding. i could def see getting tired/lazy and just bopping along then WHACK, bike goes sideways

they decided to not try to go back up, had to drag it down another tier then Jeep it out. (YT comments below pics)

boring trail ?! i would be in heaven with that scenery around me on a day-long dirt bike ride. btw, i'm dying to do a Hatfield-McCoy vaca. i've heard its nothing short of epic to do a few seasons of exploration there.

more pics from the day after... $80 in damage

After returning the next day we climbed down with 100 feet of tow rope rated to 2000 pounds just in case. Once we saw how little damage there was we climbed down to see what our full options were. We saw that once out the horseshoe canyon we were only about a mile from the main two-track road. We knew it would be possible to get the jeep closer to that spot then if we were to winch it back up to the trail I crashed off of. We lowered it down the last tier and walked it out to the jeep.

    Wow!
That's a reason to have a helmet cam.
Would have been great to have a cam on the bike too.

Amazing. I backed the clip up several times, trying to see what caused the crash, but I could not see anything in the shadows...

Look at photo showing the bike. You can see a good size rock on the trail edge where those scrub trees are. There's a small bush on the side of the rock in the direction he was heading, so from the camera it just looks like a nice soft bush. Looks can be deceiving.....

^ yeah, if you pause at 00:39 you can see a tuft of grass then what looks like a rock to the right of it. perfect spot to catch peg/guard/frame.

insane to think how the scenario could have gone. that shit is far down and solid rock. ouch.

EDIT: just watched it again, its pretty amazing he didnt go with the bike... looks like it did a little dance left/right then just flew

If that was me, I would have went over the edge, because I would have been hauling ass on the trail like that. I know there's a learning curve to riding, but man, that trail looks damn fun/fast.

I definately looked like he rode on the front wheel (only) for a few feet before getting off.

But there are some unridable (at speed) drainage ditches, etc. off the side. Don't ask me how I know this...
