Now that I am starting to get faster on the track I am caring more speed which also translate into more air. Since I am in the air longer the bike has more of a chance to go out sideways but I also have more time to correct it.
I have know idea how to go about correcting and thought I would ask because it would be better than figuring it out by trail and error.
You can only really correct nose up, or nose down situations. pin the gas if you are nosing down. roll off, shift weight forward and or tap rear brake if you're wheelie-ing.
If the bike goes sideways, you're only recourse is to gas it hard when landing. Definitely the toughest to learn and scariest.
The nose isn't really the problem. I have gotten used to move that where I want it. There is a great 30' table top on the track that I ride that really lets you mess around with the front end. I have gotten used to pushing the front end down for the down hill landing instead of tapping the rear brake, that is fun.
It just seems to me when I watch others go off jumps they have a way to pull the back end back in line before they land when it kicks out on them.
The rub is that they are kicking the rear end out on purpose. Entirely different dynamic from what happens if you cross rut on the face, or get kicked by the lip.
To practice what those guys are doing, find a jump in a turn. Start turning on the ramp, and it will start to happen naturally.
Body position, and you can control the bike with your legs and hips in the air, but if you can't figure it out on your own find someone your watching that can do it and ask them, its a lot easier to show/explain with a bike then it is to try to explain on a forum.
ya like Paul said, as far as your bike kicking out or cross rutting just pin the gas and it hopefully straightens out as you touch down (I broke my foot cross rutting this winter aha).
As far as whipping it out on purpose, I think the best way to explain bringing it back is in the bars and putting pressure on them. For example, if you whip the rear wheel to the right, your hips are pushed over the left side of the bike and as you bring it back and begin to land you are putting pressure on the bars/front of the bike back to the right side.

That was the deep rhythm section at MX207. I got lazy, wasn't focused and supermanned with a fully twisted throttle. Wheelie to Superman, Wheelie to Superman. Yeah - that was fun...
Deeto has the whole thing on his vid cam I was wearing - good stuff but he won't send it to me!

I'll never forget the day I supermanned the big jump after the downhill double at crow hill. Totally unintentional, but later the lady came up to me and sad, "no feet off manuevres. I know you're excited, but..." I said, OK, I won't do it again, but I was thinkin, lady, if I coulda, I woulda kept my damned feet on the pegs. That landing hurt like hell!
lol - I was there with you that day - I think by the day's end you're shoulder was ALL messed up

Ya, I kept running off the track due to that hydraulic line binding my steering causing brutal headshake. It was usually on hard acceleration up to the jumps that I would lose control causing 3 serious wipeouts.
Any time you want to set up my trailer ramp again, let me know... Lol!
I am by no means trying to whip or scrub or anything to that factor, but I do have a jump that is right after a turn that I think I am sometimes whipping it by accident. I will have to keep the suggestions in the back of my mind when it happens next time.
I have not had a lot of problems with cross ruts on the face of a jump yet. Prob ally because I am still pretty cautious with them. I will defiantly remember that the throttle is my friend when it comes to that situation.
calling deeto... we need the vid of Justin's bronco ride!
