    lappers...

I need some honesty here. So If I decided to do a track day sometime in the future and I was slow does it piss everyone else off that has to pass me?

I've never done it and have no idea how I'd hang. So be honest, do slower guys drive you nuts, I would sure as hell think so!?.

as long as you pull to the side on the straights and let the faster riders by no one will care.....if you gun on the straights making it so the slower bikes can't get by then hold them up in the corners, yes people will be pissed.

Just stay on the line... faster guys will get around you. The only time it becomes a problem (and dangerous) is when the faster rider can't predict what the person they want to pass is going to do.

Everyone is friendly and we have rules in place to make sure everyone has fun. Egos and 'get out of my way' are left at the door as much as possible. You won't have to worry about being the slowest out there by any stretch of the imagination. Your first day you'll start in the red group and I wouldn't doubt you opting to advance mid day.

you will have a blast, dont worry about speed. Like BigRed said, just let people by on the straights if they are stacked behind you. There is always the ol "hit the pits" if you are faster and want to put some distance between you and a slow gang.

Alright well I guess this makes me feel a little better.

Is there a place that kind of explains the different levels of groups or classes?
or is it pretty much, slow=red, little faster =advance and good rider =something else?

    Re: lappers...

It is the passers responsiablity to pass the passee..

That said you will be in red group where there really isn't much passing going on.

When you get into yellow or blue just remember to not nail it on the straights and park it in the corners.

I HATE being all up on the ass of a liter bike all over the track to have him walk on me on the front straight and brake before the 4 board. (when I brake at the 2 board and carry more corner speed)

I guess part of my skepticism is trying to keep up with people or trying to stay out of the way and pushing myself too much into a corner or something.

I know this sounds like Team Squid Racing but I'd be riding my daily driver which I just sank some money into so crashing =

dont worry man...everyone that has been on the track has felt the same way. It's really intimidating...there will be plenty of instruction, in class and on the track.

Ride at a pace that you are comfortible with and stick to the line. You shouldn't have any trouble. You will risk crashing your bike less on the track then you would riding on the street because the track eliminates many hazards.

Man, I have lots of research to do here.

Just listen to the trackday instructors and check the ego at the door.

Fuck research. Get out there and have fun. Dont worry about anyone else. Like everyone said, and will say, when you get on the straight, peek over your shoulder, if theres a stack of bikes behind you, cruise down the left side (at loudon) of the straight, let them by, and hop in behind them. Youll be fine.

LOL I hear ya I just meant about tires and stuff like that.

So how far in advance do you have to purchase track days? I was just cruising around Tony's and it seemed like there still lots to be had. Do the sell out early spring?

One thing that helped me when I started riding is remembering that everyone on that track was in your shoes at some point. I felt like a gigantic roadblock at first, but it will come to you.

Kind of related....what would be the average lap times of the groups?

If you think about it.. Someone in every group is the slowest person on the track no matter what the level. No track day I have ever been to is about being the fastest on the track, Its about getting all the factors that can make you faster in your head, then into practice... and have fun doing so. that being said if your the fastest guy in the slow group means your next step might be that your now the slowest guy in intermediate...

Tonys tends to sellotu ahead of time. Ive gotten a few trackdays the day before by buying off NESR members that had something come up and they cant make it or something. If you want to be assured a track day, get them as soon as possible, and you save money too

obviously there's NO timing going on due to liability & insurance reasons, but if I had to guess.... Red varries from 1:40's to 2:00+. Yellow is probably 1:30-1:50. Blue 1:25-1:40. As you can see there's a good amount of overlap... Grouping has more to do with your skill, control and your comfort level with passing and being passed. That's what we look for. A skillful rider that's in control impresses us more than a fast one that's on the edge.

    Re: lappers...

We average about 20 NEW track day attendees per day. So, you won't be alone, nor will you likely be the slowest person out there.

Besides, as others have said, nobody cares how slow you are (within reason), just that you can follow the rules and stay on line (all of which we show you, so no worries there).

I am Really against the whole Move out of the way Idea Just slow down and the otherbikes will get by. When people look over their shoulder they tend to drift.

But I dont Organize trackdays so do what the organizers want

    Re: lappers...

I've done a couple trackdays on a hopped up CRF70. Despite all my work, it is still not the fastest thing down the straight... yet. Topping out around 80mph to 90mph, noone seemed to have a problem going by me on the straight, I just held my line and they found a path around. Easy cheasy. Predictability is key, they knew where I was going to be, eliminating any guesswork as they went by as to weather or not I was going to drift left at random, etc.

The last track day I was at there was a gentleman on an Aprilia RS50, all of 6 something HP, but he knew the line and stuck to it, again no problems.
