That was my solution. Go through T6 faster and a gear higher. Worked out better in the end.

Pete said FULL THROTTLE upshift. There's a difference.
I understood ... but just wanted to be sure the OP did. (or anyone considering a quick shifter)
Personally, my quickshifter on the TZ250 accounted for about 0.5 second per lap at Loudon. Remember though, you're doing a lot more shifting on a small two-stroke, so that improvement would diminish on a larger torque bike.
As others said, they are nice to have if you have hit your personal "wall" for lap times, but way down on the list for new trackriders and racers.
A shift at 8 is a scarry one. Rising/falling hill and some rumble at the apex at the treehouse. I tend to slightly reduce my acceleration at that point. I've heard bikes set up where the revlimeter kicks in. Similar thing.
For my Hawk. I tend to short shift before T7 and dive it to and thru 9.
to the OP, i got to page two and skipped the rest, dont forget the back protector, you can buy them at the track or better yet somebody on here might have a spare to lend you for the day. Your first time is exciting and maybe even too much going on, gear, bike etc...take it easy and make it simple, the track community will lend you a hand on anything you forget, just bring your bike, your gear and some money for lunch....you can camp there you know....i do that all the time...its free.
that's what I run. the problem is that's the only turn I shift in so its the only turn where I'm not on the balls of my feet on the pegs. And I only started doing it maybe 2/3 of the way through last season so I still gotta get used to getting my foot in the right position beforehand.

Up shifting in a corner? No way!!!!! Brett, you are some kind of radical beatnik non-conformist! Wow. Unreal.
Oh yeah, MSF basic rider course, day 1. Matching gears to speed. It includes an upshift while cornering.
I would like to make an announcement to anyone who races and does not feel comfortable up shifting in a corner. Please, I implore you, turn in your license.
That's not what they're saying, Degs. You're taking it outta context ;)
Grabbing an upshift at full race pace while at full lean in T8 is kinda iffy.
I'm a little confused here, are we talking about grabbing an upshift after the flip from 7?

:stupid: upshift in 8? Full lean in 8? Doesn't compute with me.
doesn't feel iffy to me, as long as I actually make contact with the shift lever. :D
yes after the flip from 7 you would be going through 8. If I would just carry more corner speed I would be in third from 5 till just before 11. but I suck and go back to 2nd just before tipping into 6. I think those are the gears I'm in.

Brett, I would suggest a gearing change might help you maintain 3rd through the bowl.
Brett, to get a little more clarification, are you grabbing this shift DURING the flip from 7 to 8? or AFTER the flip is complete and you're established in your lean for T8?
If it's IN T8, then I agree with Degs... you may want to experiment a little bit with your gearing. Upshifting at that point WILL increase risk in that already dangerous area as you get faster through there.
I think most will agree that if you need a downshift for the bowl (like I do), an upshift close to the peak of T6 (near the grandstands) or DURING the 7 to 8 flip is ideal, or at the very least, preferred over an upshift IN turn 8.
already changed gearing late last year. The problem is my lack of mid corner speed. We had already talked about this last year and figured that I could just carry third through 6.
yes I was shifting after the flip after I've already finished all my steering input for 8.
you suggested I ADD a couple more teeth to the rear than I did. you wanted me to run gsxr gearing. I chose to go with the equivalent Honda gearing. So I did sorta listen to you :P
I am in the same boat man. I want to do as much track time as I can get. Have you taken any courses? I would like to take a course through penguin before I start any track days. It's been a few years since I was at the track and would like a refresh. Is a racing liscense required to do track days at Loudon?
That's good to know you don't need a liscense but to take there course and get a little more training is about the same price as a track day. I'm sure it's not going to be as much actual track time. Plus I could get my liscense to race in lrrs if I can get the time off of work.
