Ummm wind chill???? dude the wind chill is just a measure of how fast something cools, not how cold it gets. If it's 35 deg the coldest any object will get is 35 deg. The higher the wind speed the faster it will cool, but it can't get any colder than 35 deg.....Originally posted by Degsy
Don't use water wetter and take your bike down to VIR in the back of a pickup truck. It COULD get down to freezing levels again, and the added windchill over the radiator as you drive at 70mph could freeze the water in the radiator and burst it.
If you want to use water-wetter, change the coolant down there.
When they say no glycol-based coolants, they mean ethylene-glycol (slippy stuff), no propylene-glycol (non slippy)

Ok, wind chill is the wrong term to use. What I meant is:Originally posted by gmdboston

"A bike in the back of a pickup truck travelling down I95 is going to freeze before a bike in a trailer travelling down I95"
Don't you have some forks to service or something?

newton didn't account for that in his laws of cooling!Originally posted by gmdboston

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

Let's say the outside air temperature is right about freezing point. Every so often it drops below freezing for a couple of minutes and then rises again above freezing. A bike in a trailer is going to be ok because it will take more than a few minutes for the temperature in the trailer to get below freezing and more than a few minutes after that for the water in the radiator to get below freezing. However, the bike on the back of the pickup truck, with an outside air temp of 32F (freezing) and a speed of 70MPH. The windchill is 12F, which means that the water will freeze very quickly if the temp drops one more degree.
Therefore, my statement:
"Don't use water wetter and take your bike down to VIR in the back of a pickup truck. It COULD get down to freezing levels again, and the added windchill over the radiator as you drive at 70mph could freeze the water in the radiator and burst it."
is correct.

you're both right, but what'll really bake your noodle is this. If the temperatures of the object your'e measureing and the temperature of the air around it are close say 35 and 31 the rate of change of the object temp to match the surrounding air will be slower than had the object been say 45 degrees and the air 31.![]()

If I put hot water in my ice cube trays, will they freeze faster?

RE: Hot water freezing faster than cold.
Maybe, depends on a lot of things.
It's called the mempoobah (sp?) effect or somefink..... I believe it's been proven to occur, but never been proven why.

Mpemba Effect .... I knew that... & I know why....... I'm just not tellin

oh and Antiperistasis is defined as "the supposed increase in the intensity of a quality as a result of being surrounded by its contrary quality, for instance, the sudden heating of a warm body when surrounded by cold"

put space heaters out there in the turn... it'll lower the density of the surrounding air. counter the resulting drop in power output w/ a shot of nnaaawwwwwwwwwwwz

Anyone who doesn't believe this is true should purchase a diesel pickup. If I park my truck on a windy, cold night, with the motor facing my house (and thus no wind gets to it), it starts up fine. If I fuck up and park it with the nose facing an open field, and thus unshielded from the wind, it wont start.Originally posted by Degsy

when I go snomobiling + have to take a leak when it's 30 degrees out, my pecker gets cold ! BUT---add a 30 mph wind to that AND my damn dick nearly FREEZES off before I can get it back in!!!!!!!!!!Originally posted by Degsy

Yes wind makes you feel colder, but it doesn't make the temperature and lower. That's why weather websites have the temp and the "realfeel". If its windy out on the way to VIR, it wont affect whether the water freezes or not. If it goes below freezing then it will. The being in a trialer or not has nothing to do with windchill.Originally posted by hardcore

windchill is how fast the wind pulls the heat away from your body which makes it feel colder, which in reality its still the same temp.
