Hey guys,
I just want to know what you guys think about what I should do. I have an 08 R6 now with 1300 miles on it, and I've found an 08 848 with about 4k miles at a dealer that quoted me $8200(I will not name the dealer since I want this bike).
See the thing is, I got the R6 new last June and am still making payment. So if I trade it in I'm most likely be upside down. But $8200 for an 848 in mint condition with decent miles to me is good price, and I've even talked to a sales guy at Riverside and he told me to get it when they sell Ducatis. On top of that the GM said he is willing to work some numbers with me to help me stay close to what I'm paying for the R6.
Well.....lets hear it.

i like em both. get whichever one you would ride more. your poor r6 is brand new! you could keep it for a year and get to know it and THEN think about trading it.
That price is suspiciously very good. That being said, you loose a lot of money the first year ownership and this is what will happen with the 08 R6. Unless you are able to get a very good trade in or sell it well privately the good price of the 848 maybe overshadowed by poor trade in/selling price of the R6. I'm with you...the 848 is the most sexy machine out there (SS that is).
The heart says yes, logic says no
i say go for it screw the money it is a DUCATI hahahahahah

How about your maintenance, repair, and insurance costs? I bet they will both be higher on the 848.
I'd still rather have the 848, but that's me and I've never really been accused of being practical.

I don't know anything about you. Your experience, how you ride - track/street/both - but I am struggling to come up with a calculus that says it makes sense to rid yourself of a damn fine scoot in favor for the 848.
Now, mind you, I LOVE Ducs...and the 848 might just be the finest track weapon for Loudon that money can buy. But have you learned to exploit the capability of the R6 to full advantage? I doubt it. Save your money. Ride the R6 until it has nothing more to teach you.
My 2 cents...

Keep the R6. I have a strange feeling you are into the 848 for looks.

I'd love to welcome you to the Ducatisti but I think that R6 is a damn fine bike and there is no need to get an 848 just yet. (plus I bet you can get a better deal next year)

I hate ducatis, I love the 848.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
lemme take over the payment of your R6.
"fuckit!"
Thats how I feel rite now, but like I said if the GM can work a deal with me then hell yes.
I know the the Duc is gonna cost more the the 6, but I'm not really a practical guy myself.
Not true. I always like cruisers and I love RC51![]()

Meh...it's only money. You can't take it with you.
If you fight the impulse and pay your principle down on the R6 you will very likely be in much better shape for trade in when another 848 comes up.
But I hear you though as I've been, for many months now, fighting the temptation to buy a certain 1098 from someone here.

I've had many bikes and love my 848 as the best bike I've had.
I raced a Honda 600RR for a few years and the 848 is more fun and better.
As for maintenance you have no concerns. Ducati's are now as maintenance free as the japanese bikes. The older bikes needed some timing belt and valve adjustments every 6K miles, newer engines don't have these 6K mile adjustments.
Thats a great price for an 848.
One thing I would look into is any aftermarket parts you would be considering.
The price to set up a Ducati will be double the price of purchasing parts for an R6. I spent $4K for an exhaust and needed ECU....I have no regrets, the bike is awesome.
Depending on your income and financials is it really going to affect you to take a loss on the R6 trade in?
Throw the R6 for sale on every forum and C.L and see if anyone bites before you trade it in.
I don't know about insurance costs either, I just race mine. Might want to look into that as well.

Keep the R6.
And get the 848. I don't believe in selling bikes.

Well I didn't argue with Doc, I just wanted to say I love all kinds of bikes and I love the sound of a V twin.
I agree with you 100% since I've been looking at some Ducati's parts just for the hack of it, and just slip ons or like 1000 bucks. My megaphone on my R6 only costs $200
I know exactly what you mean, but if the numbers come close at the final total to what I'm paying for the 6 then is not so bad.

Its not the way to make a deal. Anytime you get sold into something by "monthly payments" you are paying too much.
Break it down.
What do you owe on the R6
What will the dealer give you on the R6
OR What can you sell the R6 for
What is the OTD cost on the 848
AND if you are financing the 848, what is the % they have offered you
If you don't understand the components of the deal (and I am not saying you don't) then you are not in a position to negotiate.

Amen, exactly what I was going to say. To further explain Manny's last bullet - it doesn't matter if you're paying $300/mo on the R6 and they get you to $310/mo on the 848 - if your loan has 36 months left on the R6, but you'll be paying for 60 months on the 848, that's a huge difference.
What I'm trying to say is if the final total of the 848 after finance is close to the final total of the R6 after finance then I'll do it for sure. I've never buy any cars or bikes base on monthly payment. That will be stupid.![]()
