    You think so?

They do have one. I have all the other shims and seals sitting in the parts washer, I just need the balls.

    But I guess $50 isn't too bad.

ohhhh yeahhhh? Just like cable stay brackets?

I'm hoping to get the carbs on, the airbox in, and maybe the rear tire on tonight?

I need to deflate the tires, re position them, and pump the shit out of them to seat the bead. neither one seated properly.

Other than that Ill wait for the steering bearing, so I can then install the forks and then front tire and get this thing off the cart its on and sitting on the ground on the center stand.

I have plenty of zip ties!!!!!!!!!!

I have a friend pushing for pod filters instead of the air box, not sure I'm into it. I guess it will make up my mind if the mounts are gone!

If he promises to be the one to tune it and get it running right, let him do it.

Meanwhile, put the airbox on and have far fewer headaches.

I had planned on pods. I am maybe confusing that CB with my old Bandit. But I seem to recall the air box being a pain in the nuts.

The exhaust gave my dad trouble a long time ago. It came to us with something different on it. I think it was separate pipes with no crossover maybe. AAAALWAYS ran like crap. Eventually he found the crossover in a junk yard and it ran great after that.

ehhhh, I was ficking around with it last night, I think the tabs to mount those honda side covers might have had their mounting tabs shaved.... Its looking more l ike you may have indeed planned on pods. At least the stock air filter comes today that I may not need!

do you have two options for the foot controls, forward and rear?

Also, the peg in the boxes seem... not for this bike?

The foot controls are off an early 2000's Suzuki Bandit 1200. That's what I was riding one afternoon when my dad got the inspiration for the rearsets. What he came up with works pretty well, but makes it so you really can't use the kicker. He did that, the bob'd seat and the trailer light tail... basically the finished parts of that project. The B12 parts should be the newest bits in there.

    Re: 1978 Honda 400 Build

Still making slow progress. Got the pod filters on. Got the center stand on which was surprisingly confusing. Any of you that have worked on these remember the center stand mount? There's a bolt that goes into the shaft but it just spins so you cant tighten it much?

It's the bolt that goes into the shaft part #3 shown here: https://www.hondapartshouse.com/oemp...747b7887/stand

I had installed the front wheel and tire, but saw it immediately rotate to a heavy spot and realized I never balanced it. I took it off and it balanced up pretty nicely.

I went to balance the rear and install it and found that the rear cush drive has a TON of play.

Note the 1/4" gap when I move it to one side.

I guess I could pay $130 for a set from Germany, but they looks about as old and dried up as what I have now.

Just run it a bit floppy? its only a 25 hp bike.

Theres a broken piece that came from the stock sprocket, so I ordered a new rear sprocket.

    https://www.hondapartshouse.com/oemp...tii-rear-wheel

Part #3 the washer is there, #20 the snap ring and #9 the seal are all fine. But the flanged broken piece isn't shown.

Is there a way to allow you to run other sprockets? it had a sunstar sprocket on it.

You can definitely just run it wit sloppy cush rubbers. like you said, 25hp. Or cut a little shim or 2 to tighten it up.

    Re: 1978 Honda 400 Build

    Made more progress this weeked!

I cut up an innertube and stuffed the cush drive and I think that will work just fine. The stock sprocket is hubcentric and rotates, the aftermarket sunstar sprocket was not hubcentric so instead of just rotation forces, it yanked it all over the place and loosened it up. Stock sprocket comes tonight.

I got the rear tire balanced, I need one more sprocket nut though. I'd like it to match the others instead of just a nut from the hardware store.

I got the kickstarter on, the stock pegs I wire wheeled and rustoleumed the brackets and cleaned up the rubber on the foot pads, got the stock brake lever installed.

Also got the gauge cluster cleaned up and installed as well as the front sprocket. Had to take the side cover off to put the sprocket on, and found out what the gasket in the boxes it, THE SIDE COVER! So that's all good now and ready for the new chain after I get the sprocket set up.

So, the guy I got the parts from on Ebay that is close by, I asked him for his email to buy parts direct and he included this note:

So that's pretty cool. I know he does have a stock seat if I can't make this shorty seat work with the mid controls.

But by the end of today I MAY have the rear sprocket and tire on as well as the chain, then I can lower it off the chainfall and it will officially be a roller!

Another friend close by thinks he may have a parts bike for me! II can't wait for the kids to ride this thing.

Oh yeah, I also got the front caliper installed. Some how in my parts, I actually have a bunch of crush washers the correct size, so I could just bolt it on!!! The front pads and rear drums look good to go on material, I bet this thing isn't very hard on brakes.

    Re: 1978 Honda 400 Build

Progress has obviously stopped pretty much, but got a few small things in the mail like gauge cluster grommets, a sprocket nut, etc.

Looked into fitting the battery, and one of the battery box mounts has been shaved so I need to figure out a solution to that. Also down to just 2 brackets, I haven't figured out where they go yet.

Super close to getting the headlight, handlebars, controls, rear tire and brake on!
