    Question open class sportbikes

So I have been looking @ buying a newer bike, most likely around a 03'/04'.

Out of the GSXR/CBR/R1/ZX-10r/RC-51 what is the best all around sportbike for sport riding on the street?

The bike will do some commuting, some sport touring, and a few track days (I hope).
I would love to hear from some PO's of the listed bikes, not the (Gixxas are sick yo)comments.
I'm on my 4th Honda this season so I've been feeling the CBR.

    Re: open class sportbikes

    I had an '01 gsxr 1000, and an '02 RC51.
The gsxr was great all around, I'd buy another in a second. It was very comfortable for me, but I know they have been shrinking over the years. Sold at 14k mi
The RC51 was pretty uncomfortable and ran hot as fuck below 20 mph. I liked the way it sounded more than anything. Sold at 8.5k mi

On that list I'd say the best all aound bike would probably be an '04 CBR1000.

cbr 1000, best overall bike...not to powerful, the power is where you need it, very comfortable (i routinely have been doing 300 and 400+ mile rides in one day on mine) and you have honda reliability!

or go for a RC-51 cause they are AWESOME!

I picked up a leftover '07 CBR 1000RR last year and absolutely love it... no complaints.

Had an '03 GSXR 750 before that, and a 97 CBR 600 F3 before that.

    Re: open class sportbikes

Ride them all if you get the chance. ha ha ha I know if you could you would.

I use to ride an 04 CBR 1kRR along with some buds of mine on the zx-10 and 05 R1 and 02 rc51 .... we did a little comparo of our own ... just because.

overall the CBR is the best rated all around performer ... period.

I did several 550 - 600 mile day trips .... several track days (NHMS, Pocono, Jennings gp >>> which is GREAT for a 1k) and prolly 8k miles of 2-up riding thru new england twisties for weekend getaways etc...

the others in the group had one thing or another that were better : zx-10 way faster, rc-51 way up on the coolest sounding, the r1 ummm .... ummmmmm cant think of anything right now

Now these things considered the honda was only a tick off from these other bikes in the measured categories .... but at the end of the day every one was wanting to take the CBR for the ride home as it is the least taxing and most useable of all the open class SPORT / super sport offerings.

Now there are other uber bikes that do things differently than these choices you mentioned but it sounds like the CBR 1kRR is your best bet.

there are several for sale on the 1000rrdotnet forum that I still peruse once in a wHile. look till your ready to burst and in the meantime ride what ever you can get your hands on ...

Oh and BTW that hesd (honda electronic steering damper) is the balls while straffing 190 at mach 3 speeds ummm and at the track too

    hope this helps,
    T'mater

I gotta say if you want to commute and sport tour none of the listed bikes really does that well.

Look at the FZ1, VFR, Bandit 1200, and maybe the ZZR 1200.

I think I'll be fine w/some soft luggage any of the open class bikes for alittle sporty touring?

The FZ1, VFR, Bandit 1200, and maybe the ZZR 1200 don't really register on the funmeter yet.

Then you are looking for a calm sportbike and not a commuter/sport tourer.

I too would go with the Honda.

funny I was going to mention the Vfrrrrr but your OP sounded like you were still looking for the fun factor with some other capabilities.

I walked into Nault's one random day after look at vfr's for two months and they had a new one on the showroom floor along with the rc51 and the 1kRR i sat on all three for a while each. thought about what i wanted to do when i got on the bike for a ride after work or on a weekend then walked out with the 1kRR. the saleman asked me why i sat on all three for soooo long ...... to which i replied ..... i was daydreaming of which bike didn't make my ass look fat then i told him that i still had the super sport in me, and that i wasn't ready to get old on a vfr or to get to my pose spot and back in two . five seconds with the rc51 (its ergos are sooo agressive) that there would be no long stints on that perch.

any way you see it a used (04-05)1kRR can be had for at or just under 5k

I would love to try the RC-51 but, I think the fuel range would be a deal breaker.

    I'll have to take a look @ the CBR 1000rr 04'05'.

meh the fuel 'range' is nothing compared to how sore your legs wrists and back will be after a day on the 51's saddle .... not sayin it can't be done just be prep'd.

personally I am waiting for the 2010 vfr ..... think there is a thread about it somewhere on NESR ... all the vfr ergo's and the balls of a supersport *rumored to have 150 hp engine* SWEEEEEET

So is the RC-51 more of a "rack" than my 94' CBR 900rr? Or a 91'-92' GSXR 750?

    They sure are purty

I have ridden a 92 GSXR750, a 900rr and an RC51 and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt the RC51 is the biggest rack out of all of them.

But it is a HOOT with the V twin power.

If you're thinking you could live with an RC, you should just go ahead and buy this http://www.nestreetriders.com/forum/...ilia-rsvr.html Aprilia and get it over with.

Better brakes, suspension, riding position, and it will run way cooler in traffic. Fit and finish is great, they do have some small problems but they're easy things to deal with.

Have you ridden any one of them? I might know a guy who has an FZ1 you could throw a leg over to check out. Gotta ask really nicely though.

FWIW; I've had more entertainment on my FZ1 than any bike I've owned or ridden over the years, and I've ridden a few different bikes.

Something about being comfortable, dragging a knee and lofting the front in the air while getting 45+ mpg is my kinda fun....that and cheap insurance and 200 miles to a tank doesn't hurt either.

But I understand where you might be getting lost....."fun" = "lower fairings"
