My wife is taking the course.
Is the permit exam open book? We don't have the booklets yet.

Not open book, but don't worry about it. It's nearly impossible to fail the written evaluation.
edit - reading failure. I thought you were asking about the BRC written test. The motorcycle permit test is different and she should study the guide online. There will only be a few motorcycle questions, and at least a few questions about penalties for junior operators violating the law and their punishments. She must have her permit before taking the course, and she should pre-pay the $15 license fee to make getting her licence easier.

People almost invariably arrive at their beliefs not on the basis of proof but on the basis of what they find attractive.

I didn't use the book when I took my permit test. I'd say that it is not open book.
I used the PDF to "study".
My experience was 30% of the test was straight off the penalties at the back.
I found remembering specific penalties to be difficult, so I would recommend rereading it right before the test.
Most questions on my permit exam were related to Youth Drivers/riders and substance use, don't skip on those.
She passed, no worries, and has a permit! Course next week.

Change o' plans. She got a call to be a movie extra so she's going today in Boston. Any of you teaching? I'm up for a prank or two....

OK, while I did MC maintenance she got through day one with no worries. The class is 10 people, 5 men and 5 women. Most of them are in their 20's. There is another middle-aged woman in the class in addition to my wife, who showed up with an HD club tshirt and a beanie helmet. The instructor brought out a helmet marked with injuries sustained by helmet location, but the woman apparently believes in the magical protective powers of a DOT sticker....

She did well, had 96 on the written portion and a minor "ding" on the practical test. One person of ten flunked. She said the Harley lady wobbled through it, somehow.

First street ride this morning, around the neighborhood and over to Castle Island. She's very excited. Operates the bike well but visual habits and "street smarts" needs lots of work.
