Bike Parts Question

I hear what everyone is saying, and I can take some ball-busting. I'm in a heavy metal band with 5 of the most rude and funny guys ever. I also do construction work for a living and there is no shortage of ball-busting there either. On this forum I just don't do well... I can't say what it is exactly, so I'm not even gonna pull some quote or try to blame any one person for something stupid they'd said. It just seems to anger me, probably because usually if you are going to say something rude you usually at least have met the person face to face! You know, I don't have a problem with anyone on here in real life because I don't count anything that has been said on a computer.
Now I know, to some of you I might sound like some out-of-touch arrogant asshole, and there's a reason for that. For one, I think it is funny... and two: when someone is new to a community, there is a level of defensiveness I guess, and a desire to be accepted. Some of you have said you've seen guys like me before, or people who come on here and are eager to prove what they can do, and I think maybe they should be given a chance too before you guys rip on them and judge them. In my case, I never came on this forum saying that I was gonna be faster than any of you, but when some people started some shit-talking, I talked some shit of my own. It's just the way it goes. Sorry if I came across rude, but when I feel attacked, I attack back. Nothing personal, like I said... this is all computer stuff. When I meet you in person I hold no grudges. I'm looking forward to meeting most of you guys, because usually I get along with people. I'm not used to this abuse!

No here is the messed up part. I NEVER gave him advice!!! I stated fact, backed by history. I could have never sat on a bike, only been a spectator and told him that if you race it is not a matter of IF you will crash, but WHEN and HOW BAD!!!!!!! Is Brain so much better than every champion to ever ride a bike? They've all crashed.I rode today with my friend Kevin Fogg and we discussed this, he told me he broke his collarbone on his first race weekend. I only even chimed in when he gave everyone the impression that he didn't need the better tank sliders because he wasn't gonna crash. That worried me BIG. No, you shouldn't worry endlessly about crashing, It would make you slow. But you do need to accept is is going to happen and prepare for the outcome. I was trying to give him a reality check because he is a Dad and a Husband. That's why I asked about his job, and insurance. Pretty fukin selfish to not have a plan for his kids SHOULD he crash.In my first post I never talked down to him, nor ever even remotely implied I was better than him because frankly, I don't care.Knowing the chip on his shoulder, I was quite careful to tread lightly and not headbutt his ego. And let me tell you, Steve will not give you your license if you ride like an asshole, yes, they can do that. They have to be sure you are not a danger to others. For that comment you stepped over the line into true Douchedom, and for that you owe all of us who may share the track with you an apology. How can my willingness to risk my gas tank make you think I'm stating I won't ever crash, or that I'm the best and the fastest, and I don't care about my family? Those are all just bullshit antagonizing statements that anyone would get angry about. It's not ball-busting, not like a joke, you are intentionally mis-stating things. And that goon RAy Ray who went on a full-blown tirade about me being an asshole... the same dude who got all pissy when I made fun of my own paint job because he thought I was taking a shot at Landrics? I did alot of reading, preparing etc... and then I ran into people like these two, who assumed I did no planning, have no talent, and need to be taught the ropes according to what they know. I know how motorcycles react when you push them. You weren't being helpful, just degrading. If you want to wait until we meet, watch me go slow around the track or do something stupid, then say something degrading... go ahead. That would be okay, and I can take that kind of shit. I just can't take it form people who know nothing about me, especially when I've done nothing to deserve it. I know Steve from Penguin was watching me ride when I did my school. He told me so. He never said anything about me riding dangerous or being a dickhead. I didn't have anyone who I passed come up to me and say, "dude that was an aggressive move" or anything like that. We all had a good time and I put effort into not passing when it wasn't safe, being predictable, and riding safe. Who the fuck are you to say my efforts aren't there? I did alot of looking into this before I embarked on this mission. I don't just spectate or read about racing, I study it. I've seen who's fast up there at the track, and watched what they are doing. I've put alot of effort into getting ready and it just sucks when someone wants to assume I haven't and say rude things. Then as if that isn't enough, make up a bunch of bullshit about me thinking I'm the fastest guy around! That's all such bullshit man. Do you really think I'm that stupid? I know that roadracing, like anything else is going to take work. I've said that from day one. This thread, like most of all my others, was going fine and had info that might help another new guy until someone felt it necessary to try and force there opinion. So some of you don't think it is possible to use a bike on the track and the street? Thanks for that wisdom, I just disagree. It isn't because it's not what I want to hear, it's just that I don't see any reason why it can't be done. Yes I may crash the thing, but what are the odds that It will be destroyed? Maybe I should have said, "I plan on using this bike on the street and maybe selling it in the future, if I don't destroy it on the track". Isn't that just common sense? No need to assume I'm stating that I'll never crash. Speak the truth people... the last thing we need in this world is deceptive people who twist the truth and make others look bad.

First off, I learned on ADVrider that you can't judge the community based on the actions of a few. I got jumped on and shat on in some threads over there, and I got defensive like you. After awhile I just said fuck it and stopped feeding them, and everything mellowed out. I think some of the things that you've said got a little blown out of proportion, but hostility breeds hostility, and it just keeps growing and growing. Suddenly you guys are arguing about things that were implied by others, turning into reasons to deride each other, and then everybody gets confused and angry because it's all bullshit.

Just because people give advice (when you asked for it), doesn't mean you have to listen to it, and it certainly doesn't mean you have to respond to every little thing that people have to say. Some advice will be good, some will be bad. It's up to you to quietly sort through it all and absorb the things you need to absorb. You don't have to talk down to those that gave "bad" advice (I use quotes because it might be decent advice just bad in your situation), or even respond to them. Those same people might give you really good advice in the future, but not if you tell them that they are wrong and you know better. That's just as bad as them telling you that you must be stupid and you can't possibly know anything. Sometimes you just have to let it roll off, especially online.

I think this probably comes from the experience of seeing a large number of race bikes and the condition that they are in. I personally wouldn't want a race bike as a daily driver, and the resale value will reflect that, and I think that's the real essence of what people are saying. Yes, you could return it to street trim, but it won't gain you anything, especially if you can sell the plastics now and make some money on them. Do you have to sell the plastics? Of course not, and it is completely your right to try and pursue a street/race bike combo. But don't shit on the people that are just trying to tell you what they've seen in the past. They could be wrong and you could be the exception. But when people assume you won't be the exception, that's not a personal insult. That's just statistics saying that the chances are slim that you are above average, especially without knowing you. If you want to think about it as being graded, everybody starts off with a C. Some people will get an F and stop racing, and some will get an A and be an all-star. But time will tell, so they give you advice based on the majority of people that start racing. There's no need to get defensive about it.

Please don't go away because of a forum spat. It will pass.

Fact is, roadracing is nothing like taking a rip in woods on a dirt bike with your friends....or doing a day of Penguin in the rain for that matter.

Once you get out there and see a rider in front of you running a pace just about the same as yours, you will start to push for that position. When you push, "things" happen. Whether or not you complete the pass remains to be seen and yes, it has everything to do with your skillset in addition to how well you are able to operate outside of your comfort zone when it comes to roadracing. This is not to say you are unable to ride a motorcycle however I am saying that there are things you simply don't know at your current skill level with regards to racing motorcycles.

The thing is Brian, roadracing isn't soley about outright speed it's also about control. Self control and motorcycle control alike. You act in haste and it will bite you. No one wants to see that happen regardless of disagreements you might have with other forum members and/ or racers.

I think the issue is stemming from your confidence in your abilites....which isn't a problem at the core however, reacting to what everyone is saying is going to make or break you on this or any forum.

Take a breath, man, and settle in. I guarantee your experience at Penguin will be nothing like any racing you will end up doing. Gotta put the pride aside and realize that no one is against you. Asking for help or advice is fine until you start disagreeing with everyone.

Just sayin.

Butcher, You make a great point and it could be a good thread on it's own. The difference between racing and track days is amazing. For some,Trackdays are enough and for others it just won't fit the bill. One of the greatest highs to me, in any form of racing, is to be wheel to wheel with a racer you trust. Knowing you can count on him to not choke, make a smart judgement call, or not to take you both out in a pinch. Yes, following a guy, trying to set him up for a pass, looking for that hole, that little slip. Then the time you think you showed him a wheel, take the line and find out he didn't know you were there and you are on each other, literally. Knowing he isn't gonna choke and you both can ride thru it is unmatchable and fast laps on a trackday can't compare. Brain may truly be Plymouth's fastest, but can he race? I don't know, but neither does he. Here is the suprise, I hope he can. We need as many as we can get. Fact is thou all that punk talk about humiliating me, and doing donuts around me makes me think he is one of those guys thats going to charge too hard into 3, try to get under someone and take them out. Maybe he won't, hope he won't, but all the trash talk has me fearful. I really have nothing against him, and hope he does well, I just don't appreciate being insulted by someone who has not yet walked the walk. IT will be an interesting first race for sure. BTW, if I was the slowest racer on the track, I'm still a racer, and Brian, you aren't yet.

I raced/Tracked my brand new street bike last year, it sucked switching it back and forth... I crashed.... it happens.. I now realize the bike is right, I was wrong, I made it crash...Sorry Bike!:mecry:

Eric, I brought my new Duc 1198 to a few trackdays at Monti. It was a blast, but a few times, especially last trackday on the 4.1 mile full course it was such a wreckfest I was afraid to take it out. Sure enough, on the R6, twice I got put in the grass by passing someone outside that choked, looked at me and drifted out. In places the steel barracade is only 20 or 30 ft from the track! Threw those undies away.

You don't have to tell me about passing people and having them choke, crash, Low side in 5.... I know it first hand and have a Titanium Shoulder to prove it....:mope:

Yea, Eric, I hope otheres on this forum know that all I was concerned with was that he understood that despite how good be believes he is, there is a very high probability that he will eventually get hurt. He took that as questioning him being Plymouth's fastest and soon to be the Novice track record holder.I've lost some friends to bikes, and one to a lousy helmet. If I couldn't stand him, I still cringe to think of a racer hurt, and of someone not having a plan if they do. Can they pay their bills on disability? Will they keep their job if they are out of work for months? And this part isn't a more experienced racer talking, it's an older guy who wants to look out for the kid. I reall yhave not a problem in the world with his cockiness,it's all just words and he's just set a really hi bar that everyone will be watching to see if he clears it. It's the arrogance and douchiness when someone tells him something he doesn't want to hear, after he asked a question?! I just hope he really is very good because with that ego, if his skill set sucks, he will be a danger to everyone around him riding over his head, or his bikes abilities, trying to back up his bravado. I really hope he stays here and opens his ears and mind as it would be good for everyone on the track. I've gotta admit, if I was racing the rookie race with him I'd do a soft start and follow him thru a lap before getting anywhere near him considering the bar he has set for himself. I do have to believe it might be the most watched rookie race in a long time, hope there is vid for the Utub!:beerbang:
