Riding is more fun than pushing

    Bike... 2007 SXV 550

Fuel light on at 48 miles

    11 miles from fuel station

58.8 miles and it's out of fuel

Didn't have to push it and was able to coast down the hill to the gas station.

Exactly 1.93 gallons in the 1.9 gallon tank

I did manage to get 60 miles in today after work so I'm still happy

So you'll be looking for a bigger tank?

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

    or closer gas stations

59 mile range, DAM, make my Hypers 110 mile range seem like a tourer.

just so you don't feel alone, the new larger tank for my Hyper is $800

I got an OEM Aprilia tank and the upgraded hardware to mount it for $300. Some say the seat doesn't fit, some say it does so I may have to upgrade that as well. Same thing with the radiator shrowds. if I have to replace both those things, the cost will be up there

Re: Riding is more fun than pushing

Nothing worse than waisting a few hours on a perfect afternoon for riding

The 12L oversized gas tank has been sitting on the floor in my extra room for almost a month. Today I finally decide to install it. Mind you, I bought this as a bolt on from AF1 Racing (AF1 Forum) assuming they did all their homework and everything would go as described. NOT the case!
After i spend an hour removing the fuel, the fuel pump, and the hardware from the stock tank, it doesn't take long before I find the first issue. There's 2 rubber bumpers on the bottom of the fuel tank that on the old tank, they are mounted with self tapping screws (look like wood screws to be honest) and on the new tank, there's a threaded insert. Not a huge deal but again, it was a bolt on kit with no other parts needed. I take care of that, next up is the fuel pump. Yet again, there's an issue with the mounting screws. Both the old tank and the new one have the little threaded inserts, but the threads have a different size and pitch. I had no extra bolts that size and wasn't about to go shopping for bolts so I swapped everything back over to the small tank and called it a day. Sending a what the fuck email to AF1.

In all honesty, I don't even see myself keeping this bike so I may try to return the tank or sell it. After working on it and having a close look at things, I realized why these things are so problematic. Lotta funky shit design wise and the bike has the fit&finish quality of a chinese knockoff.

I had the same thing happen to me. All alone, 1:30 in the morning, riding a rented Harley Ultra from Vegas to Tonepah on the Extraterrestrial Highway.

Last tick on the digital guage ticked off - engine shut down.

Coasted down the last hill, through a blinking red light, into a gas station...which was still opened...

sometimes its just better to be lucky..!

bummer, but thanks for being the guinea pig did you ever get to try the seat fitment out?

i agree with you on the fit & finish. i read (and received) so much crap over the years about my Buell but one of the first things i noticed with the Ape was the pretty poor fit, finish, fasteners and suspension. i'm still REALLY into the bike, just surprised me. my Husky is way above the Ape straight out of the box.

I wish I could plate the YZ without spending a fortune, at least I know I could run that one for years and only worry about gas and oil changes. It may happen

I did have the seat on and it wasn't to bad of a fit, though it was a pain in the balls to line up the little tabs in the center of the seat...more so than the stock possition. I'd probably end up upgrading to the 08 just because I'm a little more fussy than the average person when it comes to fit. I'm heading to the hardware store now to get some stainless bolts for the fuel pump, I need to go there anyways and don't feel like paying AF1 $2 a peice for something they missed at the time that now mysteriously shows up on their website as a special order

Yup, fit/finish/fasteners isn't great. One thing that really eats me up is having a brand new bike and having the stock decals pealing off the tank and radiator shrowds. Not happy about that and not happy at all with what i was told when I brought it up to the dealer

side note/thread jack: the AF1 single-stage filter works great! definitely smoothed out the lower revs and gear transitions for me. bet the derestricted map is a tad rich with the airbox sealed up. increased intake noise is pretty sweet too!

It really is a frustrating bike. I have wanted to love mine, but haven't quite been able to. There are a lot of things I like about it, but just as many that are pretty infuriating.

Thats not what I was getting at but...

It would be hard to believe without experiencing.

Mine is being rebuilt at the moment. I am looking forward to riding it again. When I find something I like for a streetbike it may have to go.

Mine has a bunch of mods. The most significant of which is the sachs factory upgrade kit You should definitely take it for a spin when I have it back.

A good friend of mine is doing it. I can definitely get you his contact info when the time comes. He is a great mechanic, but can be a little slow.

The r7 is sitting I had a bunch of little things I wanted to do to it. The top of the list was figuring out a fuel injection issue. It tended to stall on decel. I got really busy with school and it got put on the back burner for a bit. I am also fitting a set of race bodywork, just in case I decide to take it to the track. I need to come up with a great paint job for it. I sort of want to do yellow/black speedblocks.

The ape, and an '86 reflex are my only streetbikes at the moment. I will definitely let you know when it is back on the road. I am still waiting to get the crank back from falicon so it will probably be a few weeks. The suspension upgrades are great, but pricey.
