so an sv would be better becuase the motor has more upgrade potential? because either the f2 or f4 are up on power compared the the sv. or are we talking just handling here.

We are talking completely different classes of bikes. The Svs run with other light weight bikes that are competitive. Much like the 600s dont run with the 1000 in ama, the SVs dont run with 600s. In its class the SV is among the most competitive and a very good place to start. If you really want cheap, you can always get an EX500 and race that as well.

yeah, i get that. i mean within their classes, the sv would have more potential than an f2 or f4 would in their class correct?

Yes, but like I said on the phone, as a NV and even AM, if you were going to get into racing, the F2/F4 would be fine, as would the SV. You have yet to hit the track yet, so after you do some track days this year, you might be satisfied with that instead of racing...however, the F2, F4, or SV would all make great track bikes to learn on, and, if you wanted to take the next step, you could sell it to the next guy in your position, and move into something thats set-up better or more competitive.

absolutely bill, im not trying to get ahead of myself here. i was just trying to make a decision that would benefit me for the longest time, by getting a bike that would progress with me if i took it further.

New thing to consider, the longer it takes you to make expert, the more likely whatever you get for a MW will be outgunned anyways. Buying for longevity in MW is a fools errand.

No an F2 or an F4 would NOT be competative as a Novice or an Amatuer (well MAYBE the F4 would be but not for long).

If you want a trackbike that will be competative in more places than just Loudon Get an SV.

If you want to race CHEAP and be competative at ONLY Loudon get an EX500.

If you want to have a cult bike get a Hawk.

Depending on how much you want to spend I can most likely find you a Ducati racebike too.

Notice I am trying to keep you in the Vtwins.

ALOT of people will have advice. Listen to those with experience.

Why don't you just convert the 749 and buy some clunker for the street?

Re: should i buy an old cbr f2 as a track bike?

doc, i'd LOVE to have a duc track bike, or a vtwin in general, ive always been that guy to push for people to ride twins, i love em. however, i think my budget is pushing me towards this f2 to get me started. i would rather have a duc, but im trying to keep myself from getting in too deep. i still wanna save some money to spend on my 749!

i havent been able to find a comparable deal on an sv, otherwise i would get one. the f4 is no doubt a good deal, but even 500 bucks more is 500 i could spend getting sorted at the track as far as tires, gear, other parts for the bike, ect. im gonna try to have max fun, minimum money. i guess my main goal is to learn a lot on this bike with no worries of wrecking my duc, and having a ton of fun in the process.

Yup, thats why I have NV LWSB wood on a GS500E... Bergs seems to do well on his F4, and everything I've read said the F4 is a step down from the F3 handling wise, too stiff in all the wrong ways.

Agreed, although outside of Loudon if you go WERA there's vintage classes where the F2 slots right in.

Get the F2 and ride the piss out of it at trackdays. Then sell it to a new trackday rider to help fund your race bike (if you decide to race)

Take the 749 on the track too... If I can take the 998 on the track you can take your 749 on the track.

Tons of great advice here about racing a 600 from lots of people who have never raced a 600!!lol

F4 is passable. Good enough to race novice. I have seen them do 13s. F2? No way. Don't even bother (in my opinion). They don't even have cartridge forks. Ok for trackdays but forget an F2 for racing.

im defintely taking the 749 to the track, i just wanna get my confidence up first, and learn the layout with no worries. that f2 is gonna get flogged proper.

the suspension on this f2 has been upgraded, i havent been able to see it so im not positive what was done to the forks, but it has an ohlins rear. im on a tight budget, otherwise i would get that f4...like doc said, i'll use and abuse this one until im ready to move on. im not sure i'd be happy with an f4 if i was to race anyway. i like twins

Well this IS the internet after all! : )

BTW, last year of the F2 had a cartridge front end from the factory.

I stand corrected!!! Also, If this F2 has suspension work then that makes a lot of difference. Just 40hp down on a new R6 lol

unfortunately this f2 is a 93...but i have to imagine some work was done to at least the internals since the rear was upgraded...this bike has been on the track its whole life, someone has done something to the forks.

    Very true.

Please disregard all my comments about not getting an F2 to race and that an F4 would be barely passable to race.

Also ignore what I said about steering you towards LWSB or ULSB and getting a twin.
