what are some things i can say to get my parents to allow me to get a motorcycle? whenever i say i want one, my moms just says keep dreaming...i know i could talk her into it, but i need some good stuff to say. she thinks that i'm going to get killed on one, and i think thats why she won't let me get one. I have a car, but i need to share it with my sister in the summer, and thats why i think getting a bike makes sense. but yea, any ideas?
easy , get them on a motorcycle then they'll let you get one . .
My dad's been riding for 40 years ,that's why he let me get one . . once you get your parents riding , then you can ride because they'll be hypocrits if they didn't![]()
my dad said he used to want one, but my mom didn't want him getting one so he never did. perhaps if i can just convince my mom we can both have one![]()
hmm , how about convince your dad to get one and then you can share it with him ? , that sounds like an easy solution.
you know what ? , I thought of a solution . . how bout this . . You tell your mom that your dad says it's ok to get you a bike if you are ok with it , and you tell your dad that your mom said its ok for you to get a bike if his ok with it . . Then they both say ok and voila . . instant rider . . .
cuz he'd be one of those old harley farts![]()
Hey this is kinda like convicing my parents into letting me get on the race track . . . I tried something like what jcsgrly was saying and trying to ask them why they won't let me on the track and they're answer is because I'm crazy enough and would hurt myself. lol , I'm going to try to go down for a track day or race or what ever this summer with my dad and hopefully he'll see the fun
do what I did, just buy it ... as soon as I bought mine, my dad went and bought one a week later .. not much your mom can do once you buy it.
or you could do what i did... take msf with your mom.
she was beggin' my dad to get us a bike after the first on-course session.
it was also fun to be the oldest & youngest students in the class. heh heh heh.
course, she's been riding pillion on my dad's bike since THEY were in college...
The only "intuitive" interface is the nipple.
- Move out and do what ever you want to.
- kill your parents so they can't say no
- buy one anyway, its not like parents these days can punish you, they will just make you have a time out to think about what you have done.

Wait until you're financially independent, then there's not much they can sayHey, that's what I did...
In all honesty, if by some tragic misunderstandingI have children some day, I would keep them away from street bikes until they were at least 20. Despite what everyone (including myself) may think at 16, when it comes to dealing with things like road conditions and other drivers there's just no substitute for experience.
It takes at least a few years before being aware of your surroundings while driving becomes instinctual. As a still fresh rider, I can't imagine trying to learn to ride a motorcycle while at the same time still learning about being on the road in general. The odds are already stacked against you that first year of riding, no sense in rushing into things and stacking them up worse.
I'm sure there are teenagers in this group that would disagree with me, hell *I'd* probably have disagreed with me 5 years ago. But that's just part of being a parent I guess, having your kids hate you for keeping them safe until they learn they're not as invincible as they thought. In the end, if you start when you're 20, you've got at least 20-40 years of good riding ahead of you; what's an extra year or two, if it'll let you learn the good road habits that'll keep you alive.
i guess you have a point...and if i don't get a bike, i'm definately dropping a nasty ass sound system in my car
we'll see....

Its probably not what you want to hear but you should respect your parents' decision. Forgiveness is easier than permission but you aren't independant yet.
That being said, the best way to do this is to take a MSF class with your father. A buddy thing. Your mother too if she wants. Agree that if after the class they still think you'll be a maniac rider, then you'll wait until you are on your own. They'll see that this is a responsible way to go about it and probably let you get a bike. Especially if you do really well in the class. Talk about reasonable bikes with them - commuter bikes. Not Gixxers or R1s!!! Not too sporty.
"This one get 52 miles per gallon!"
"Three year warranty and a store credit so I can by a good helmet"
Point to the R1 and say, "That one's really pretty but its too fast"
VERY IMPORTANT
When you get the bike, be responsible with it. You'll be on probation even if they don't tell you. Call if you'll be late and go home early sometimes.

I can't speak of this, for I've never run into that problem. But I like Smoke Eater's reply. If I WERE to give advice, it'd probably be just as he put it...
I was lucky enough to have been blessed with wonderful parents that gave me my first ride on my 6th birthday. My wife & I went on our very first date on a bike, and her and my daughters have always been very supportive of my riding, and now racing. After my accident, they were all a bit concerned. But they shortly realized that - for me - life without a bike would be miserable...
Just don't push 'em, and be sensible. Start on the correct foot and take the MSF class. But by all means, stay outta their faces with it...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
well i got my dad to say i could get one when i could afford it. finding a job around here is a PITA, theres nothing around. theres a new marshals opening up 10 minutes away, so i guess i'll apply there. kinda fruity, but its a job. i've applied to staples, cvs, stop and shop, target, and probably some other places and didn't get so much as a call back from any of them. but i'm spending 5 weeks of my summer vacation working in alaska, and making some webpages, so i have some money. but even if my parents buy me a bike, i still gotta pay for car insurance, bike insurance, gas, all my gear, the msf course, and i dunno how the hell i'm gonna afford all thati know i sound spoiled, but you have to factor in that some people pay for their car/bike, but their parents pay for insurance and gas and gear. theres no way i could afford to pay for everything myself. so don't think i'm spoiled, i'm not getting one till i can financially afford it.
Aaaaaahhhhhhhh........to be that young again. Hang in there. Just about everybody here was at that same point at some time or another....![]()

That kid was was going to get a fucking BB Gun one way or another... i don't see why it wouldn't work for a bikeKeep dropping the occasional hints here and there, but don't be in their face as this will piss them off big time. Do everything he did, but don't swear, or spill your dad's lugnuts..
