https://police.boston.gov/2024/07/09...-the-back-bay/On Monday, July 8th, 2024, Officers assigned to D-4 (South End/Back Bay) were directed to patrol the Back Bay neighborhood while focusing on enforcing motor vehicle law violations involving mopeds and motorcycles. Throughout the patrol, Officers recovered thirteen (13) mopeds for various infractions, issued multiple Mass Uniform Citations, and arrested three (3) suspects on multiple offenses.
Officers arrested Thomas Gomez-Vera, 21 of East Boston, after he attempted to flee Officers on his unregistered moped scooter. Officers stopped Gomez-Vera to inform him that his moped was unregistered and uninsured and cannot be operated on a public way. While gathering personal belongings off his scooter, Gomez-Vera started his scooter and attempted to drive away on the sidewalk. While trying to evade Officers, his scooter contacted two Officers and after a brief struggle, he was placed into custody. Gomez-Vera is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court for the charges of Assault & Battery Dangerous Weapon, Failure to Obey a Lawful Command by a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and was issued a Mass Uniform Citation for Unregistered Motor Vehicle, Uninsured Motor Vehicle, and Marked Lanes Violation.
Additionally, Officers arrested two other suspects during their directed patrol:
Officers arrested Recep Demirel, 28, of Boston, who is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court for the charges of Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and operating an Uninsured and Unregistered Motor Vehicle.
Officers arrested Kenan Yeler, 20, of Somerville, who is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court for the charges of Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle.

The guy is about to get a civil citation and decides to flee on a scooter, ala George Costanza. Now he's arrested on an a la carte menu of much more serious offenses.
Since the report states that he was gathering his things from the scooter, I'm guessing they had already ran him in the system, so he wasn't evading open warrants.
There should be both a criminal statute and a special prison wing for "not overly dangerous per se, but dangerously stupid."
Also, dumb cops. How hard is it to have the perp stand away, use the key to open the storage compartments and then let him get his stuff? They let him have the key and weren't paying attention long enough for him to start it and flee?
Or, smart cops. They let him have the key to see if he might do something stupid...

NEVER been able to wrap my head around "struggling" when you are being arrestedAre you prepared to kill the cops to get away?!? Are you Royce Gracie/Jason Statham/Mike Tyson/Liu Kang/Goku?!?
Cause if the answer to either is NO, what's the point of the GURANTEED additional charges & getting your ass kicked before you get thrown into the back seat?!?![]()
On Thursday, July 25, 2024, officers assigned to District D-4 (South End/Back Bay) were continuing traffic enforcement of off highway vehicles to include unlicensed operators, unregistered, and uninsured mopeds and motorcycles. Officers focused their efforts in the 500 Block of Boylston Street, Huntington Avenue/ Gainsborough Street, and the Ink Block Neighborhood. This particular traffic enforcement is to address the ongoing community complaints of reckless operation of these vehicles seen in commercially populated areas.

update on the seized bikes sent to the dominican
ATVs are illegal in Providence. So why are police shipping them to the Dominican Republic?
https://www.providencejournal.com/st...c/74548536007/
In the past, the City of Providence destroyed the nuisance dirt bikes and ATVs that it took away from the miscreants who were caught riding the machines illegally on local streets.
It was quite dramatic.
But then a Rhode Islander named Ibn-Hashim Bakari had an idea.
Why not keep the machines in good condition and put them to use in a place where they might help people?
The place that Bakari had in mind was the Dominican Republic, which has been a beneficiary of aid and cross-cultural opportunity supported by an organization he founded in 2009: Lights & Sirens International.
Bakari recalls that the idea drew some sharp criticism from some naysayers.
Some suggested, citing problems with corruption, that criminals would snatch the machines and no public service would result from their presence in the Caribbean nation, which shares a large island, Hispaniola, with Haiti.
But on Thursday, Bakari could confirm with great satisfaction that 17 of the 21 machines had made it all the way from Rhode Island to the country's capital city, Santo Domingo.
Each of the 17 dirt bikes and four ATVs remain in good hands
Four of the 21 pieces of equipment were still in transit, under the control of customs officials, Bakari said.
The other 17, he said, had been lined up outside the front entrance of a transportation facility for the Dominican National Police, where police officials held a press conference on Thursday.
An international covenant on dirt bikes and ATVs negotiated by Rhode Islanders and Dominicans
The shipment of the dirt bikes and ATVs to the Dominican Republic was the goal of a pact that Bakari helped negotiate.
Cranston and Providence officials agreed to provide the equipment to the Dominican National Police, and the Dominican agency agreed to pay for the shipment.
Bakari said he bought the lock for the container and tracked the shipment.
Enclosing police reports with an overseas shipment
Due to the status of the machines as confiscated, Rhode Island authorities did not have ownership papers for them, Bakari said.
Instead of titles, he said, authorities supplied police reports to the customs officials who inspected the ATVs in both the United States and in the Dominican Republican......
So thugs steal bikes from people and the police sell stuff they don't have papers for to their counterparts. Everyone wins except the people who had their stuff stolen in the first place? Nothing to see here, please drive through.

I wonder if they will ever stop using the term moped. Closest thing I’ve seen in a while would be electric bicycles.

There can be no moped without any peds...
I'm speculating, but these appear to be in good shape and, despite what some of you may believe or remember, that area has become quite gentrified over the last few years. It is entirely possible that many of these belonged to "normal" residents and not "bike life"
I still agree with forcing them to be registered, but the news reports does not state that any of them were moving when confiscated of that riders were ticketed.

I had my YZ250 stolen when I lived on Mission Hill in like 2007. To this day I still answer "unknown" numbers in hopes that it's BPD and they found my bike

Darwin let us down
In NH you can register up to a 50cc scooter as a moped, You have to sign a statement that you will not exceed 30mph, My GF registered her 49cc scooter, I followed her once at 50 mph, I rode it once, 30 scared me.
