The outer shell actually does little of the protecting of the head. It is more to contain the styrofoam and padding. Small chips from dropping are simply damage to the paint. As long as the shell is not cracked it should be fine.
Helmet companies have to cover their asses and say that if it is dropped it needs to be replaced.
The real damage to a helmet occurs in a crash. The styrofoam is designed to take one good hit. It crushes to obsorb the impact of your head, and does not spring back so if you hit again in the same spot there will be less protection in that area. The foam padding will still be fine, but that is mostly for comfort. It also covers the styrofoam so you can't see the damage. Most of the time the damage is not visible with the eye anyway. A density test of sorts must be performed.
If you drop your helmet, there is nothing inside it to crush the styrofoam so as long as the shell is not compromised I would not worry....but don't be an idiot and drop it just for the hell of it. :confused:
I know the styrofoam is the actual absorber of the impact...it's just the whole concept of deliberately dropping a new helmet on the ground that baffles me. By his friend's way of reasoning, since the styro isn't damaged in such a drop, then why fuck with the helmet in the first place...risk breaking vents, fucking up the paint/graphics, etc. What good does that do?
