There are a couple Ducs on my shortlist -- 939SS, new Monster, 1098 StreetFighter, HM1100S. Or if that rumored 1100 Scrambler happens. The KTM 1290 SuperDuke is a contender. Also (oddly enough) the MotoGuzzi Griso 8v. If I can figure out how to get my hands on a Motus. If Eric Buell could stay in business long enough to support a bike. If BMW built a K1600R.

We'll see.

I do count myself lucky, and I'll miss that bike. But bikes have come a long ways in 24 years, and I'm looking forward to what comes next.

I don't feel that Ducati owes me anything. The sold me a good bike 24 years ago, and I got my money's worth out of it.

I have tested the Zero, and a couple of other electrics. They are totally unsuitable for my riding needs. Call me when we figure out how to store electricity decently, and make batteries obsolete.

No doubt both are great bikes, I've always just preferred the "mini" 4V's of >900cc's... they're lighter, turn quicker, and you can use it all.... but I'm sure the absolute mind-melting torque of the 1098 is intoxicating, and you can get golden suspenders so.... wouldn't blame ya one bit!

As for a next bike, I must be in the minority in that I wasn't really a fan of how the Ducati SF's ride, at least for long haul comfort. Personal opinion of course, you were obviously quite comfortable on that monster.

Hyper 959 should get a test. I love mine (821) with the bags and windshield, it's a great step from the monster. Also, the new motor is awesome. Not as torquey as the air-cooled, but smoother, and it breathes when you hold the gas open. Slipper clutch is awesome, modes/fueling awesome, seating position, perfect.

I testrode the 1098SF a couple times, and it seemed to fit me really well. I could do 600-mile days on the Monster easily, and did a few 900-mile days. We'll see.

For next bike, might I suggest a Triumph Tiger 800 XC? Mine is 6 years old and already has almost 103,000 miles on it. Over the winter I need to take care of a couple of minor things and generally give it a little 100k TLC, but I have no doubt it'll happily do another 100,000 miles, and more.

I've checked out a few variations of the newer 4V HM, and for me, they just don't measure up to the Mountain O' Torque that the HM1100 had. If I go with a HyperM, it would definitely be the older 2V aircooled. That bike is distilled raw fun.

I have ridden those, and although nice, the whole adventure bike thing just doesn't do it for me. If I liked that style of bike, I'd just get a MultiStrada and be done with it. But it isn't me.

Several people have suggested such things, but I decided a long time ago not to end up with "grandpa's hammer". I was going to run it as long as the core original bike was intact (frame, engine, transmission). I have now done that, and am ready for the next phase. I'm really becoming enamored of the idea of going all out and getting a Motus.
