I couldn't agree more. Someone needs to tell them that that front brake will not kill them.

And like I say, I like Harleys, I rode one once, it was fun, but some of them are OBSCENELY loud. I live right off the Fells Way in Melrose and you can head them miles away, cruising down the road. I got no problem with them, but I can see why a LOT of people do.
I am with you on this one but....to each is his own and they need to target the loud guys and not Everyone...

    Re: Falmouth Targets Noisy Motorcycles

Grumbling is not really the answer.. they are just enforcing the law as it has been written for a long time.

I don't think I'm really at a big danger of getting pulled over, due to my catalytic converter my bike is still pretty quiet relatively speaking.

But the pipes say right on them they are not legal for highway use. Pretty much every aftermarket pipe says that actually.

If I get a ticket I'll pay it under the "pay to play" theory. I generally avoid "cruise spots" where the police have to enforce this stuff like the plague, I find almost nothing fun about tooling my motorcycle through an area crowded with pedestrians, bicycles, and auto traffic at 5mph to try and look cool. If it was *my* town that was pulling me over and ticketing me that would suck, stock pipes cost a fortune.

Unfortunately probably the only real way to solve the "bike with loud pipes revving downtown" is to go after anyone with modified/illegal pipes. It's much more cut and dry then trying to enforce a dB limit. If it gets bad enough the aftermarket companies will find a way to make legal pipes that still make the bike sound better. I don't think it's impossible, the car folks have generally figured it out and some bikes already sound a lot better stock then other bikes do.

If you're not loud ... you probably wont even be pulled over. I find it hard they're gonna pull over every bike and check their exhaust. Im sure the AMA would have a field day with that.

Have you been stopped? People see this type of thing and assume that there is a campaign against bikes. Talk to me after you ride the cape for a year without a ticket. I know from experience sitting in the back of the roo bar on main street that I have had coversations interupted by harleys and sportbikes that have exhausts that are way too loud. If you feel that you need to run the D&D to be the absolute loudest thing on the street, run it. Just don't cry when you get a 100 dollar ticket because you woke up the whole town.

This is absolutely correct. If you are not splitting ears you will not be pulled over.

"Our officers can tell if someone is on a crotch rocket going 90 MPH," Riello said. "But motorcycles do make a certain amount of noise, so no one will bother four or five motorcyclists riding their Harleys."
    Ok like another said????
What does this mean in relation to the article. It was all about noise abatement issue ( a fair complaint) But the above statements is about speed? Lord knows my last HD with its aftermarket exhaust was quite a bit louder than my ZX6R is with its aftermarket exhaust is now. And its a boatload less noisy than 5 Harleys with aftermarket exhaust would be. Seems to be confusion on what residents are complaining about (noise) VS what the cops are going to be looking for ("speeding" sportsbikes)

the comment about speed is relivant. even a harley going through the main areas of falmouth will not cause a complaint. it is when the squids go rippin down main st at 70mph (and they do in spades) or the harleys sit there and rev the engine in traffic for no reason, that is when it becomes a problem. you have to understand a fair portion of the revinue for this town comes from tourism and if it is not an enjoyable enviorment then people are not going to come. botttom line if you think your exhaust is so bad that you will not be able to get through falmouth, then by all means stay out of falmouth.

no, like i said, born and raised in the town and i ride there often. i went to high school with a couple of guys on the force and my father is a deputy with the sheriffs department. i am telling you with absolute confidence that this is not an issue. the reason i am taking issue with it is that people see one side of this. a bunch of people who do not know the cape motorcycle scene are like "Fuck falmouth, noise nazi's" when this is not the case. if the guy cited in the article had been 35 insted of 85 then i would have been happier but in my experience there has been some people who have no regard for the rest of us. Like it was said before, if a honda civic was running through your area at 12-1am sounding like a harley or a street bike with a straight pipe, you would be pissed, no? that is all they are trying to prevent. keep in mind that tourism goes both ways, if they start cracking down on all non-oem exhausts they are going to loose all the riders that come in the summer. it is not benificial for them to do so. ride through falmouth all you want you will not have a problem.

Im with ff36buell and woodsy on this shitshow trip, ill bring the popcorn and video camera for when nick gets ripped off his bike... And the 90mph "crotch rocket" low blow makes that guy look like a complete retard. I could do 90 down a street at a lesser decible then some of these straight pipe harleys going from 0-30. That is assuming we are just concerned with sound and not me doing 60 over the limit.

agreed it is a stupid comment. what i think he meant was we know the difference between a reasonable exhaust and the D&D ripping down the road doing 90. Stand by for the Ride to Falmouth thread!

you need to worry more about the riding than where you are going, who is calling, and who is texting. you ever figure out what the burning smell was or were you on the phone?

you wait untill the flipup goes in there. I'll be watching biker boys, texting, routing to my destination, while listening to my ipod searching for that burning smell. Texting is only done at speeds of 100+ when I can kick it into neutral and not have to worry about putting my hands on the bars for 15-20 seconds.

    Re: Falmouth Targets Noisy Motorcycles

The enforcement of "loud pipe" laws has been on the rise over the past few years here in RI. Venues like Thayer Street in Providence, the entire city of Newport, Bristol just to name a few. Just because a few small-dicked douche's wanna over rev there bikes these laws are now enforced. These venues have seen decreased bike attendance over the past few years due largely in part to ticketing and harrassment. Officers use the "loud pipes excuse" for traffic stops in these areas then are quick to find other flaws in your ride. Directionals not far enough apart, improperly mounted plate, insurance/registration infractions etc. etc. etc. Obviously, I don't know if the PD of Falmouth will have the same hair across it's ass like those here in RI locales. But if they do, you'd be wise just to stay the hella outta there. You are on two wheels, you will be stereotyped. Those residents (i.e. tax payers and more importantly VOTERS) who complain about their quality of life have a much louder voice than those of "transient hooligans" in the ears of public officials. And who does the chief of police report to? Oh yeah, the town council!! Especially now that the "public nuisance" is published in the newspapers, this topic will be monitored and discussed by the local busy-bodies that have nothing better to do than ruin other peoples fun. It's a no win for bikes.

im from Falmouth too (grew up with Woodsy) and he is right, the cops in town are good people. This is fundamentally the same issue as the Wind Farm, the traffic, hell, you name it, these summer "cape codders" show up, demanding this stereotypical (far from reality) cape experience and anything that they feel detracts from that becomes the next HUGE ISSUE.

Only problem is they are the rich folks, not those of us who actually live there, and they get all the legislative attention due to that fact. it sucks.

My VFR with the LV pipes is loud. I ride often in falmouth no problem, and Woodsy is right, there are some AWESOME roads down there (sippewisset-->Woods Hole-->falmouth heights for example).

Im up for a ride to the cape, I just gotta make the CBR street legal again...

Ben is right, this road (once the sand gets cleared up) is AWSOME. if anyone is planning on riding that route i suggest you pre-ride it and then go for it. there is a lot of shit that can sneak up on you.
