    need to get this fixed!

hey guys, the shifter on my bike is fucked up and from the advice ive gotten so far i have a feeling that this is gonna be a problem thats a little over my head. general consensus is that its a broken spring inside the case.

so im wondering if any of you know of a trustworthy mechanic that wont overcharge you, or if any of you more accomplished and experienced bike guys would mind lending some knowledge and garage space. normally im not afraid to tackle repairs myself but ive had a few people tell me that this may involve taking out the whole motor. soooo.....HELP!

hey pete, i dont have a service manual but whats going on is ill tap the shifter down into first gear and the shift lever will stay all the down so you need the reach your toe pretty far down to get under it to go into second gear. when you try to shift into third it feels like the lever wont go up far enough to shift. the lever itself feels very sloppy and has a lot of play in it

Crashed recently? Sometimes a bent rearset will prevent the shifter from returning to neutral when it is tweaked.

Re: need to get this fixed!

my 900SS was having a similar issue so i pulled the left side case cover off to check out the springs and they looked fine, ended up some road grime (it was gooyey nasty im not sure what it was) got into my shifter linkage/rear set from the back and was gumming up the pivot point real bad. Cleaned it, took lever off and cleaned it all out and greased it, problem solved. I dunno what kinda bike you have but on my 900 the worst part of accessing the springs was that to change them you needed to remove the flywheel to access the lower one, but besides that didn't look like a tough job.

It should be noted that said shifter issue caused Mike to miss a Newbury pose. Please give this the attention that a situation as serious as this deserves.

I kid, I kid. This is for the 98/99 but I'm about 96% sure it will work. If not, let me know and I can look harder.

My 01 9R did the same thing. It was just road grime and grease gumming up the shifter pivot point. Take it off, clean it up and put it back together with new grease. 5 minute job you can do with the OEM toolkit under the passenger seat.

Re: need to get this fixed!

Just in case I was not clear, the shifter pivot point that gums up is on the foot peg post. The peg assembly needs to come off the frame to get to the peg bolt on the back side of the peg assembly.

how about this as i can tell you are afraid of tools and your bike. go to a car wash and power wash the peg and it should clean it out then lube it up.

at least pull that sprocket cover etc

i think i still have a factory service manual for one of those in addition to some parts still laying around.

i'm not far from you if you want to borrow or buy the manual.
