A couple of forums are reporting that BMW has halted sales of the S1000RR. Anyone seen anything official yet?

Might have to do something with owners doing oil changes and regularly finding there magnetic drain plugs looking like this.

My friend picked one up a couple of weeks ago from Max's in NH..He hasn't heard anything from the dealer as of yet.
No official word as to why, just a "memo" to halt the sales of the 2012...
Looks to be true. I would have thought they had things handled by this point. My 2010 had one of the soft cam shafts which ended up leading to an entirely new motor and trans having to be warrantied in for me. I know that since I bought the extended warranty I am going to be beating the piss out of the bike this season to make sure if anything goes on it they have to cover it.
At least from what I have been reading BMW has been good about owning up to it and making things right.
That sounds like a whole lotta fun for BMW. A friend of mine used to work for Chrysler and told me a similar story -- someone had messed up an early machining process and there was this large random sample of engines sitting on dealer lots that would self destruct in a few thousand miles. They had to come up with a test for identifying the defective engines and then dealers had to do all these engine swaps on new vehicles.

Yeah bmw is keeping eveyone in the dark so far but there have been about 5 or so connecting rod bolt failures from around the world on the s1000rr forums. Nothing official but the buzz is that the rod bolts on cyl 1 were 30% under torqued when a robot was check for calibration. Im sure BMW knows the problem and theyre just trying to minimize losses and apparently its a worldwide hold/stop on the new bikes not just north america like it was originally thought. Im not letting this go lightly just waiting on a official word from bmw and whats going to happen. I didnt pay almost $20k for a bike that needs a new motor already regardless of the reason.

I race to win, and if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you're no longer a racing driver."

oof. the perennial risk to buying a new design, but they are so goddamn powerful and fast...
I hope that you guys get your issues worked out. BMW is no slouch, I am sure if something is wrong, they will make it right.
I think id be beating the piss out of it. I doubt it would explode, probably just make some terrible sounds and shit the bed real quick-like.
Good luck!

Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
The bikes affected are those that were built between Nov 2011 thru Feb 2012.
The conrod bolt seems to be over torqued on cylinder # 1, which results in vibrations over 9000 rpm (which means it affects bikes after the rev limiter is removed). BMW is paying the dealers to under torque the bolt on all affected bikes. Until the new bikes are fixed, the dealers have been advised not to sell them for safety reasons.
Official statement from BMW:
BMW has issued a delivery hold and is recalling 1,414 2012 model year BMW S1000 RR motorcycles to inspect and correct a potential problem with loosening of the connecting rod bolts. As a result of a manufacturing process error, the bolts could loosen and fall out. If this happens, the engine may fail, seize, and/or leak oil. Approximately 900 of the affected motorcycles are still in BMW or dealer inventory and will be inspected and corrected prior to customer delivery. Owners of potentially affected motorcycles will be notified by mail in May advising them to bring their motorcycles to an authorized BMW Motorcycle dealer to have the recall performed. The connecting rod bolts will be replaced and installed with a thread locking agent.
