Gixxer gear position indicator

I just dropped in to see how the community is doing and ask a question for a colleage at work.

He recently got a tire change and noticed that his gear indicator reads the wrong gear.
He has tried lifting the battery lead off to remove power in order to reset the ECU...

Is there some other simple reset that he can perform to correct this?

Should have a gear position sensor under the sprocket cover with two bolts. Try removing it, cleaning it, and adding a bit of dielectric grease. Also double check the wiring and clean the plug. I think they are usually fairly cheap on eBay if cleaning doesn't help.

I suspect that the GSXR gear position indicator is the same one used on my DL650. Mine went wonky after 1.5 years, and I took it out and cleaned it as best I could. It worked for a short while, but went bad again shortly after. Mine would either go blank (resulting in an FI error on the dash, if it stayed blank long enough), or read the wrong gear. I bought another, and installed it. Now, it is getting finicky again. It is especially finicky when the oil is cold, and it gets better once the engine is warmed up fully. It also seems to be sensitive to oil type - it works better with conventional oils, and synthetics/thicker viscosity make it worse. IIRC - the part costs about $70.

BTW - It is impossible (or nearly impossible) to physically set up the GPI to read the wrong gear. The device has only 2 mounting screws, and a pin that indexes it to the shift drum. It does not have multiple positions to chose from. It only has 1 pin, and 1 corresponding hole, resulting in only 1 possible position to mount it in.
Most likely, this has nothing to do with the recent tire change, but only seems so by happenstance.
