great question. there are so many things about my bike that are illegal, but I get my bike inspected at a custom chopper shop, so they pass it. Have been pulled over, and nothing mentioned about my directionals, plate, lack of plate light, dB level or mirrors... :knocking on wood:
some insight Vince?

Accept your violation / tow / points on your license and arrest. That is all you can do. I had my plate there back when I had my 929 in 2001, as my undertail had no provision for a plate. It is just another reason for a LEO to give you shit... and more likely to give you a ticket that you may have otherwise not have received. I never thought about the injury it could cause until a fellow rider pointed it out to me. I made it work after that by making a bracket / light.
The inspection station could also get hauled into court with you and lose their ability to inspect.
Also you can also change many things on your bike after inspection... anyway and get cited.

valid inspection sticker or not, if a cop finds something that isn't honestly legal then you can still get ticketed/towed etc...
i understand all this "find something else illegal" stuff. but honestly...how many cops out there know enough about the legality of motorcycle directionals and mirrors, etc......and then, how many of those few are dicks enough to pull you over for it. i got pulled over once for the plate the was it was before(facing downwards), and the cop (town cop) was just like ok just go get it inspected soon. another time, after my plate was stolen, i had to ride with my new plate in my seat. i rode right in front of a statie for about a mile through my town, either he wasnt looking where he was going, or didnt know/care enough to do something.
in any case, thank you for the input, criticism or not. ill keep in mind that my bike might attract unwanted attention.

Contrary to popular belief most cops aren't out looking to bust your balls... I see "illegal" things on bikes everyday and don't ticket the operator...
but if I wanted too... I could write them on everyone... regardless of the inspection sticker... it's called discretion...
that was the only point I was trying to get across...

well its too bad more police arent like you then. knowing enough about bikes and respecting respectable riders enough not to hassle them. thanks for the info again though. ill just keep an eye out and drive nice 'n safe

No, it's not a matter of opinion or taste...
There are holes where it is meant to be mounted in keeping with the manufacturer's determined mounting location which their engineers got approved by the DOT... It's supposed to be mounted in those holes, no matter what you tell yourself.
An inspection sticker has nothing to do with the legality of the motorcycle.
What else can an officer do? He could ticket you for your illegal plate.
I don't care about your plate or what you do to your bike... but don't fool yourself.

listen squidly, most cosmetic aftermarket parts are labeled "off road use only". undertails, exhausts, led's. When you install one of these parts your inspection sticker is technically voided. I am almost positive a cop can scrape the sticker off your bike, make you fix whatever he doesn't like and force you to get your bike re-inspected.
all we are trying to tell you, don't push it. and your plate mount is pushing it... even the "coolest" cop is going to have a problem with that hinge.

which i do not have. so there we go.
seriously folks, what impact will it have on your life if i get hassled by a cop and/or get a ticket. last time i checked, police dont ticket you and everyone else you associate with. the same things keep on being said over and over on here, but the fact or the matter is my plate will stay as it is unless i want to change it for some reason. maybe in you worlds police are money thirsty ticket happy maniacs just itching to pull over a bike for something as foolish as a side mount plate, but in my world police arent that crazy

damn, you get 70-75 mpg highway, thats pretty good.
really though, i dont know what else to say. until something like that happens to me then its staying as it is. if something does happen this site will be the first to know so everyone can say i told you so and blah blah. chances are that maybe one of you guys didnt signal or swerved into another lane a little to violently or something else like that.
so far ive gotten kicked out of nantasket at night by a cop when i had no sticker at all, pulled over by a cop who told me to fix my plate (when it was facing straight downwards), ridden in front of a statie with no PLATE at all, and gotten a parking ticket with no plate. in each instance noone really gave a shit about my plate, or lack of plate. maybe its just me and i have good luck with cops![]()

You dont have to be a smartass people are just trying to help you or warn you of what is probably going to happen. As much as this thread is amusing its also stupid. I'd blame it on youth but I am young myself, some people just have more common sense then others I suppose when it comes to advice.
you got 4 years on me buddy, and probably not much more common sense if any. if you read the first 2 pages of this thread you wouldve realized the same thing is being repeated, so here, on page 3, i have earned the right to "be a smartass". it doesnt take 100+ posts for me to understand everybody's disapproval

I don't know if it will matter to you... but ya see his avatar? if I remeber correctly he really earned that... which I'm thinking took some common sense along with his training to stay alive long enough to be awarded it...
