    Harley-Davidson Pan America

I just signed up to test ride a Pan America next month. While I'm still undecided on its looks, I am impressed by the hydraulic valve clearance adjusters. I must be getting old bc the idea of eliminating valve checks/adjustments would be sweet. Seems like it has most other things other ADV bikes have.

What are your thoughts on this thing??

It's lighter wet than my Tiger 1200 is dry: 503 dry 534 lb wet. Not bad IMO.

Lighter than a GS. Lighter than a Tiger 1200. Lighter than a super-tenere.

The more I read, the more intrigued I am. Great move by the motor-co.

    I still don't want it.

I think that's for the base model. MCN tested the Special recently and they said ~570lb wet.

There's a lot to like about it. There are only a few things that deter me. One is that there is not enough suspension travel and ground clearance. The more I ride my Super Adventure, the more I realize I need an R version. The other is the looks, but I can't really complain about that too much as the owner of a Super Adventure.

A dealership on every corner is a really attractive proposition, however. The only question will be whether the mom and pop dealers will even be able to work on these things.

Glad to see HD pointing their engineers in a direction far more aligned with my interests as a rider. Still looking forward to the Brooklyn or whatever it was going to be called.

I'm not a HD fanboy, but I hope they do well by this machine. Unlike the standard segment or even the sporty touring segment they keep failing miserably in, I can see this doing well. I may take one for a test ride simply to ride one. I have no interest in one myself though. Just not my thing, I guess.

I like it alot. and am glad to see them branch out elsewhere.
all though it would never sell if they shoved this new motor into a sporty touring bike, that would be awesome.

It looks like a boat anchor. I'm having a hard time believing those weights. Did they fill it with helium?

    Re: Harley-Davidson Pan America

The marketing photos don't do it's weight justice. If you look at any of the demo shots (tons of them on advrider) it's a lot slimmer than it looks in the pics.

Very yes, buy it and ride it. I live near the HD dealership and will probably try it.

HD is getting scrappy because their old source of income, (fat ass old men in lots of leather with blonde wife) are finally dying off.

Even in special trim that's still not bad considering the special comes with center stand, crash bars, skid plate, etc . I wonder if that includes the adaptive ride height feature (something I don't see myself utilizing).

EDIT: HD website says special is 527 shipped, 559 wet

the more I look at the bike, the more I dislike this offset emblem on the special:

The base model emblem looks so much better:

This was a surprising entertaining video to watch how the Pan America compares to the other big ADV bikes on paper:

    Re: Harley-Davidson Pan America

Its getting a lot of positive reviews in Europe right now, especially from the scandavian countries where bikes like this make more sense. Even with my shitty translating skills i can make out almost all praise. Couple people have pointed out it has a flat power curve which they didnt care for and not quite as good as a beemer but still very good. The most popular comparision ive read is comparing it to an earlier KTM adv bike.

I think the ultimate word will come after people have owned it for a while. Current harley reliability is pretty poor and with an all new bike its bound to be a bit worse. I think that will make or break the bike.
