I hope it does well. I don’t think I can live with the looks, although it does look much better in black. The engine sounds promising, but why does it look so... I don’t know, fake? Toy-like? Anyway, I’m not a Harley fan, but I hope they do well going in some new directions, I could be won over if they keep it up.

I think the black version only looks better because you can't see the front end.

Adventure riders love cosplaying almost as much as Harley riders. Even Harley knows that; they hired Rev'It to design their clothing for this bike.

Eek, requiring premium fuel is going to make it tough to truly adventure.

It has knock sensors, so you can still ride it with regular.

Even my 1290 Super Adventure has gotten regular when no premium was available in the middle of fucking nowhere WV. As long as you don't rev the piss out of it it'll be fine.

No quips about the Super Adv running asking for premium though?

I don't think a high compression engine with knock sensors would mind all that much if you needed to kick down to regular unleaded in a pinch. I suspect as long as you don't ring the shit out of it (as mentioned), about the only thing it may effect is gas mileage.

IIRC the 1250 GS specifies 91 AKI (aka "premium") as well.
    Tenere 1200, also specs "premium"

I suppose we could go on and on and on.

Yeah...that's kind of where I was going.

I'm not a Harley fanboy, I just happen to own one. But to see ANY motor company jump into a genre that's had at least a good 10-year head start and produce something that may just be able to compete on the sales floors, roads and adventurous touring is astounding. I mean, we can nitpick all we want. But it's quite the feat. Of course they're gonna miss a few targets, but they've made quite the effort here. I hope it does well just to get them out of that typical Harley demo.

Based on looks alone, I could actually see myself on one of these. Not that it'll happen, but I can definitely see myself on one.

    Re: Harley-Davidson Pan America

My opinion is that "competing on the sales floor" is essentially not much different than what Harley currently does. Both of the huge Pan Am threads on advrider are mostly filled with people who already own Harleys and display them in their avatars. I get the feeling that most of them already had their minds made up that Harley is the best, America is #1 and all that mumbo jumbo. I've seen that stuff plastered all over Facebook already in the TAT group. My guess is a good 80% of the owners will end up being Harley fanboys who wanted to dip their toes into adventure riding but couldn't be bothered to try out another brand, or can't stand the idea of buying a non-American bike.

That's not to say that the bike is bad at all. In fact I believe they did a phenomenal job stepping into a space they never had much experience in.

In any case, I don't think I'll have to go to the local Harley dealership to check one of these out; I'll probably be helping pick up all the ones that fell over the next time I ride parts of the NEBDR.

No shit? I never would have equated current Harley owners to be the adventure rider types. But I get the blind brand loyalty now as I've been around it for a couple years. I mean, I'm not a brand follower for the most part. But I understand how they are now.

That's where I'm at. It's amazing that in just a couple years they've been able to develop something like this and be able to toss it in with the already established big boys.

Yeah...I have a feeling a lot of people that just GOTTA have the latest offerings from HD will get into this not having ANY idea what it's really about. I foresee many used ones available by summer's end. Not because of anything other than inexperience on the rider's/purchaser's part.

I've had 87 in my Tiger 1200 for over 50k miles now. Not sure what it calls for but I actually get better MPGs on 87 vs 91 (I used 91 for a month to compare).

While I can see some truth to this, I imagine it will attract a lot of people who would never even consider a Harley. Take me for example, I've never owned an American motorcycle and I'm genuinely interested. As I get older, I find myself wanting to spend less time/money on maintenance and the hydraulic valve adjusters are what initially got my attention. If the price and features are competitive and Harley has the edge from a long-term maintenance perspective (never thought I'd say this) I would definitely make the jump. But I would wait a few years to let others work out any bugs and prove reliability.

I never even thought of that angle. But it could be a valid point.

I've yet to see ANY adventure bike that was appealing to the eye.

The first picture in the thread makes me think I'd really like this thing with just a round headlight lol. The front is definitely not great, otherwise looks fine to me. Kind of exciting to see Harley doing something different.

The only adventure bike I find truly attractive is the V85TT.

Had to look that one up. Again, not my segment. But you're right. As far as adv bikes go, that IS sexy!

I think every Triumph I’ve had has specified 91 in the manual, but all had anti knock and worked fine on 87 in a pinch.
