Only on a few occasions, only island I had to do work on sans power was camp island. When I did run off the generator it sucked balls because you had to wait for the compressor to spool up, listen for a chop saw, table saw etc. So if I had to make a rip I'd just wait until I heard the blow off valve and send it, but that's why island work is 3x the money.
Eta as in a 3 or 4 man crew if that wasn't obvious

I know all about island work, either digging a test pit by hand, or barging a backhoe, my most recent island work was on Barndoor, west side of island, they had a breakwater, but still took some skill to dock. We drove out a couple times in the winter, that's when they did the construction, adding a 2nd floor, they never had to put in the septic, it was "only in event of failure of the existing system"
years ago, I worked on a subdivision on Cow Island, we barged a backhoe for that one and he got a flat tire on the island. I worked on Bear Island once too
at least 3x

Re: Help me organize my garage
I have a crew coming this Monday to epoxy my garage floors, and I've hit a bit of a snag. I was removing some old cabinets -- literally kitchen cabinets from the 1970s -- and it turns out that the previous owner glued these cinder blocks (cinder tiles?) to the garage floor:
Attachment 58440
I asked the owner's adult son, who lives next door, and he remembers they glued them but doesn't remember how. Fair enough, it was 20 years ago. Is there any way I can get these off without creating a huge mess? I really want the blocks gone because I want to epoxy underneath them, and I don't plan on putting cabinets where these guys sit.
My #1 fear is that I try to pry the blocks loose with a huge pry bar, but the blocks end up breaking and leaving bits of rubble literally glued to the concrete floor. That seems like a nightmare to deal with if my goal is to have a smooth epoxy floor. Any suggestions? Or should I just have them epoxy over the top of the blocks?

Break the blocks out, chisel any stuck on chunks, solvent and scrape any residue? Leaving them in place doesn’t seem like a good option but thats possibly my OCD talking. I love the look of epoxy floors!!

I was thinking grinder to smooth it off

Re: Help me organize my garage
Get the tiles off, hand grinder with a PCD wheel. It will take the adhesive right off.

If it was glue and not epoxy, use a heat gun.

Re: Help me organize my garage
Thanks guys. I'm more worried about getting the tiles off at all than I am with cleaning the floor that's left under it..
Using a heat gun against a 2" thick concrete paver is probably not gonna work :(

it will if the glue is old and shit. you could also try a mapp gas torch.

Re: Help me organize my garage
chisel and a hammer at the seam may break them free...could try to hit them with a sledge hammer on the side to shock them loose
-
Re: Help me organize my garage
these are also handy for burning off sticky crud. best not to breathe in

Re: Help me organize my garage
Can anyone recommend a good junk removal service? I have about 10 concrete pavers to get rid of, as well as a bunch of scrap wood that came from demolishing two old kitchen cabinets. It would fit in the back of a regular pick-up. I'm in Waltham...

I have a non-resident Acton transfer station sticker if you want to DIY

I'm out of time (and don't have a truck) so I ended up throwing money at the problem. Thanks though!

Re: Help me organize my garage
Lol, always a viable backup solution
I emptied a 5x10 storage unit so my moto shed is once again a mess, without enough space to work on a bike.
Clean, Organize, mess up, repeat.
My next solution is to buy another property:spit:

Re: Help me organize my garage
Any recommendations for wall mounted shelves?
Would need to anchor into concrete. I have all the tools to do so properly. Something adjustable and not full wall height. I can supply wood for the actual shelving, I'm looking for rail/bracket style setups.

I would go with something like this:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Style-Selec...pright/4640129
Pretty cheap, they can go out to 24” OC and the brackets can support good weight. Brackets are pretty cheap as well, seems legit. I just did the non adjustable L brackets directly into the studs with 3/4 plywood 16” deep, has worked well. This system looks better for sure.

first, I built a 2x4 insulated walls with drywall, so that I wasn't dealing with fastening to concrete, studs 16" on center, my shelf brackets every other stud, the shelf above my workbench is 18" deep, made out of 5/4 pine, I got some heavy stuff on it, batteries, boxes of parts, I noticed it was sagging, so I added a cable stay every 64", now it's perfectly level and flat, I attached an 8ft led strip underneath to light the workbench. my first attempt at cable stays was a failure, I bought too light a cable, and weak hardware. Couldn't even get it level, as I tightened the turnbuckle, I watched the cable fray apart and eye hooks stretch. I went up to 1/8" cable and compatible hardware,
I wouldn't trust the adjustable brackets on rails (unless it's some industrial setup) for the weight I am storing, tools, batteries, gallons of paint and other liquids. for a bookshelf, sure, but even books will fatigue the brackets and the slots on the rails over time, I figure if my brackets fatigue over time, I just tighten up on the cable stays

Re: Help me organize my garage
Pretty minimalist these days in the main garage.
We have a 60k sqft fab shop 8 miles from home so we don’t need much here.

i would look on CL services or marketplace...or try posting the pavers for free on a local FB group...even try the scrap wood...someone may pick it up to burn in their fire pit...i've gotten rid of a bunch of kids stuff that way...
i think the price of a pickup for these is a little high (almost $300)...could get a dumpster rental for a little more...

may be too far away...i went to school with the owner of this company...

I posted on Yelp and ended up getting someone for $300 + a small tip. He was a good dude.

Re: Help me organize my garage
Any recommendations on bike storage? Will be for my mtb and kids bikes. Would need to store 4 bikes. Does it need to be more complicated than those screw in J hooks?

Re: Help me organize my garage
Jealous. I'm about to embark on a home renovation project and one of the items is to add another garage bay. I think I'm going to do a lift as well.

I ended up going with Boston Garage. I think it was about $5500 and it looks amazing. I got probably 5-6 quotes and to be honest they were all within $500 of each other. Boston Garage had the best availability and said they did the most of them (like, several hundred garages a year). Of course, I have no way to verify that number.

I like the hoop ones I use better than the hooks. I think they are for weed Wackers. You can get them at Lowe's or home Depot

Oof... That's a grand or two more than I expected.
But how many square feet are we talkin? Was it the garage I saw when I grabbed those shelving units?
Did they have to make any concrete repairs beforehand or just sand it out & lay the product?

Yeah, it's the garage you saw. I would call around and ask some companies: the prices tend to be "$XXX per bay", but my prices were a little higher as my bays are unusually deep. Minor concrete repairs were included in the cost.
