Help me organize my garage

Re: Help me organize my garage

that looks good, but I'm guessing it's overpriced for what it's doing

kinda like this...but dipped in rubber, and bigger

    how's the garage coming?

"thinking" about it or has it been started?

Other option is to rent an SDS hammer drill from HD/Lowes. Either way, you're renting tools. Regular rotary hammer drill won't cut it, they're pretty useless.

Strapping, as mentioned, then whatever your finished board is on top.
Anyone got a Ramset or SDS hammer drill I can borrow? Will trade for beer. Otherwise I'll rent one.

Hah, I didn't even think of something as simple as that.

Garage is coming along slowly. Got a couple of pegboard sheets up but the rest are going to need to go into a stone wall. Also need to start thinking about wiring this week too

I have some pegboard material from the Depot up in my garage, and while I like the concept I hate the execution. Pegs are always falling down and the peg material itself is wobbly and tends to sag. Maybe I did a shitty job mounting it, but I don't think so. I know McMaster-Carr and other outfits like that sell steel or aluminum pegboard.. I kind of wish I had tried that.

For lighting, my 2-bay garage (about 24x24) has only two lonely light bulb sockets, one over each bay. I bought a bunch of USA made 48" HO industrial strip lights from ProLighting. I replaced the light bulb sockets with junction boxes and fed a whole bunch of these lights through conduit. My garage is lit like a paint booth now.

    TechBrite T442T81BCNT0000 48" 2-Light T8 Industrial Strip - No Reflectors

I'd consolidate all of those miscellaneous toolboxes into one box that has a more vertical footprint that fits everything. You'd probably save a bunch of space.

Do you really need that huge air compressor? Do you do a lot of work that a really high quality electric impact wouldn't do? They have come a long way.

I have a couple of lally columns down in my basement, and attached strapping to them with huge stainless hose clamps. Makes for some interesting storage mounting possibilities.

the thinner pegboard needs back support maximum 16" on center, I have mine with the back support structure setup horizontal rather than vertical 12" on center

I have one area that is thicker pegboard ¼" thick and also commercial grade hooks that you would see in a retail store display, they are rock solid, don't know where to get em tho, cause I got mine used

    bump for ideas

I bought a rental property & my unit just has a SMALL shed:

    it's 7'6" x 7'6"

currently storage...but I want lights/enclosed so I can work on stuff at night

that size would need serious organization

    inside:

    was thinking:
-shelves along the top -everything stored up there opens up full space on floor to house bike/walk around
-frequently used parts on low shelf
    -have fold down counter
-run extension cord from laundry room for light/stereo/cordless tool charging

already flipped the door around so it opens outwards (otherwise space behind doorway is dead space)...ran an extension cord from the laundry room & have 3 fluorescent lights

I just redid my garage setup and ditched a toolbox in favor of pegboard. I'm too lazy to link but I bought some stuff made by Durahook - these have a screw that goes in and hold the hook or whatever tight. They also sell standoffs so you can use the whole board. The only thing I would have done different is use the thicker board, 1/4" would be super nice and solid.

The steel setups are also nice but $. In the end you are spending as much as a quality roller tool box which is what I was trying to avoid. I think I spent $100 or so. Help me organize my garage-img_3885-jpg

I plan to finish wrapping the pegboard around to the right.

Shitty pic but there is board in front of the bench on the left too.

Re: Help me organize my garage

made a little progress on the shed today...

I have too much $hit...need to spend a day and throw stuff out/organize

    for now, everything's in totes:
    1.) chemicals
    2.) tools
    3.) bike parts
    4.) gear

key for small spaces: get it all off the floor!

when I want something, pull the tote down

they're heavy as $hit and I'm gonna get hurt...might go for pegboard tools at least...maybe smaller shelves for chemicals

wheels/tires = have to be hung up

diagonally, it's *just* big enough as long as I don't fill it with clutter...

but anytime I work on a bike, other bikes need to come out...

should work great for the few years I'm here until I buy another multi-family

Thread of awesome, it motivated me to start cleaning the garage and get out the Tiger! First ride on it since knee surgery last June.

Re: Help me organize my garage

    just re-cleaned the shed

now I see why pegboard is so popular...keeps stuff off the ground/out of boxes...your tools are in 1 place - you grab it from the same place everytime, then put it right back. Every tool has its spot...instead of mixed in a tote full of $hit. I seriously hate when I can find a multimeter, go out and buy another one, just to find my original one wrapped up in a plastic bag in one of the totes...

Wall is getting pretty cluttered...but at least it's clear enough to work on the bike and park a couple bikes in the there

Re: Help me organize my garage

    bump for more ideas!

cleaning today...need to work on the YZ...2 years later I hardly touched the stuff in the totes.

Chemicals - chain lube, 4 stroke/2 stroke oil, WD-40...buy rest as needed

Tools - I honestly use 90% out of a small pack that fits in a backback - 10mm/12mm/14mm, couple pliers, screw drivers, and sockets (with individual sizes bought for axles). I don't keep a tire changer...I just take it off the bike and pay the $25-$40/wheel. I don't do chain and sprockets...my guy is $50 while I wait.

so looking to actually clear more out, get organized, and keep it simple:

    1.) two bikes I ride often (Vstrom for commute/slab/touring/surf boards...YZ for hooligan/single track/desert/LAB2V)
2.) minimal tools (tool pack + 1 tote for large/irregular styff)/chemicals in ONE place
3.) 1/2 ton extended pickup to haul - keep as much in/on truck at all times (ie. RotoPax fuel can + jumper cables + tie downs + ramp)

Re: Help me organize my garage

Mine is always in cleaning but I always appreciate more ideas and motivation.

As others have said, one of the key points is to put anyway away that you're not using on the daily. Either further in the basement of higher up on the walls or even elsewhere.

I just put away my wheel dollies for the car and my motorcycle stands in the basement after mulling over it for 5 minutes. Yes its further away and less convenient but all those take up a lot of room permanently that I'd rather have open. It's not that big a hassle to grab them later when needed a few times a year.

Re: Help me organize my garage

now that I am retiring, or at least trying to, I am gradually making room in my barn for what it was originally intended for, a garage, no more employees, I'm moving desks and drafting tables (hoping to sell the ones I no longer use) soon as I get em out of the way, I have a 10'x30' space for motorcycles. I will have to move my office completely to be able to use my center bay for automotive

Big fan of these dewalt shelves. I ended up having to buy 4 but they're great. Added 4 led lights and really brightened things up as well.
