Hey i need an opinion. I got my 88 Ninja 600R up and working and am thinking of getting another project bike for cheap.
I found a 1989 Ninja ZX1000 on craigslist that looks like its in good shape. The only things wrong with it is it needs a clutch, clutch basket and timing chain. They are asking $1000 for it. Think its worth it? Is this a good bike to begin with? thanks

I'm not sure I'de pay that for one that needed nothing.

i emailed the lady and from what she says, they got it inspected and this is what they were told was wrong with it. it would cost about 400 bucks to fix.
screw that. walk away.
ugly bike anyway. And there are much better deals out there.

good lord, if you are going to go through all that trouble to restore a cheap bike, at least pick one from an era when they looked good.
unless you are having "top gun" fantasys leave the 80s bikes alone.
A 1989 is a ZX-10.
From the photo, that looks like a 86-87 ZX1000 Ninja. A grand for a bike that needs a clutch and a timing chain? If those two items are gone, I'd bet it lived a rough life.
Unless you GOTTA have it, I'd walk away. They made a lot of 1000 Ninja's. Bound to be a clean one left somewhere.

Pass on it.
If they can't take it out of there wet basement to shoot photos from all sides you know it's a loser.

I used to have one. Bought it for $700, and sold it for $9 (both in working order but questionable cosmetics) It was ok for what it was, I had fun with it at the time. Heavy ass bike though, 592 dry.

+1 on what everyone said; you can get much better condition (or newer) bikes for a grand that aren't at the end of their life...that bike looks like a pretty big money pit for restoration
although, I do have a soft spot in my heart for the 80's ninja's...my first street bike was an '89 Ninja 600R

I own a 1984 Ninja 900 and it was in very good condition when I picked it up for $1500 7 years ago. Some of these old Ninjas are in a sad state despite having been quite the bike to have in the 80's.
I'd like to keep mine for a long time.
Maybe another season on the road then a rebuild and restore project?
It was a big deal in 1984, she's been good to me and deserves to be looked after. I think that will be my plan going forward.
