    Honda CRF50

What is one of these worth used? I know they are used as pit bikes and have sort of a cult following. There is one for sale in my neighborhood I though about buying for my 4 year old son. I don't have any details yet, but it doesn't look too old. Any idea what they generally sell for?

A good one under $1200? The website lists them new at $1250. You sure we're talking about the same bike?

they hold their value better then harleys lol

used are not much cheaper then new ones and xr's are the same thing but with different plastic...i say get 2 so yoy can ride with him

there are training wheels available and govener's i beleive...500-1200 depending on what parts it has....500-750 is probably decent for a stock one...

new is around $1200. if its stock, it should be around 500-800 (similar to bigred's). but alot of ppl mod it with parts that are more than the bike alone.

I'm for one for my 4 yrs old also. either crf50 or pw50
bigred, do refer govener as the throttle limiting screw ?

The sign says $600. So I guess that's where the negotiating starts.

Something to keep in mind for a 4 year old. The pw50 is fully automatic while the crf50 and ttr50 are 3 speeds with an automatic clutch.

He's firm on the $600 and it seems to be about the right range. It's a 2001 and looks pretty clean to me. I am still considering it but not sure my son is really ready for it at this point. He has an 03 ATV as well - Suzuki z50.

Everything on craigslist is all done up for like 1200 bucks. The only reason I was thinking about one is for a pit bike, I dont need the wheelie bars and all that nonsense, since Im not sure Nate would appreciate that.

600 is a fair deal, if theres nothing wrong with it, i'd go for it. They are bulletproof stock motors. If you are getting it for yourself, for not much more you can get a modified one used one.

I am pretty sure it has some throttle limiting screw somewhere, so you can slow him down because stock 50' still do around 25-30 ish

There are training wheels out there for both the TTR50 and CRF50. You could start with the training wheels and remove them when no longer necessary. You get the advantage of learning to shift without the worry of crashing.

Another thing, I know that the TTR is electric start but I'm not sure about the CRF. For me, I'd go for electric start (not coming from a dirt background, kickstarting seems like an unnecessary effort for such small bike).

    RE:

My kids had one and were 7 and 3.5 at the time. The biggest shortfall of the Honda was that being a four-stroke, it was significantly heavier than the oil-injected two-strokes (Suzuki and Yamaha). Depending on how big your little one is, weight could be a factor.

As for the governor, there was a machine screw located on the backside of the throttle that you screwed in to limit how much twisting they could do. Screw it in enough and they don't have to worry about shifting. However, the three speed was the main reason I chose the Honda. When they were ready for the next level, I just back out the screw a bit and gave them a lesson on shifting. This way I didn't have to run out and buy a new bike when they were ready to move up. Additionally, when there were ready to move up, all that had to be learned was how to clutch and brake, not clutch, brake and shift.

Electric start or kick start? Once again, weight might be a concern. There's was a breeze to kick start and therefore no big deal.

Power? At the time I was 240 lbs (178 now) and it hauled my then fat-ass around without too much complaint. It was the literal "little engine that could."

Air Filter - when riding dirt bikes in the dusty dirt, cleaning the air-filter after every ride is a must. The air filter on the Honda was a colossal pain-in-the-ass. I don't know what it might be like on the other bikes.

    Fun? All motorcycles are fun!!

    Hope this helps!
