    Inspecting helmet after crash

What do you guys do for having a helmet checked out after a crash? Didn't know if there was a place that did that sort of thing. I went down today, I know the helmet took a good shot. Deep scrapes in back of helmet, and a I got a slight concussion. I figure its a shelf ornament now, but was curious if there is any hope for it. Thanks Tim

What type of helmet is it?

From talking to the fine folks at DuncanMoto, I believe you can have certain brands sent to the factory to get checked out.

Send it back to the manuf for a free check. But, a quick check can be done...if the foam (closest to the shell, not the soft liner) is painted black and there is any white showing through anywhere, then the protective liner has been compressed there and is NG! Best to have it check out by the manuf though. BTW- if they say it's NG they usely give you a pretty good deal on a replacement if you mention that you race or do trackdays!
    Good luck,

if u hit hard enough to give yourself a concussion, i'd replace it. yeah, i know...the brain slaps around in the cranium, which is a decent amount of force, and maybe the helmet is still viable, but why risk it? manu's aint docs, ya know. A concussion is a concussion is a concussion, not to be screwed with.

Good or not I think Id retire it if I got my bell rung as you describe. I have a helmet in my basement that killed me to retire. It has a very small scrape on the crown. I figured I did a face plants into the tire barrier with a bike on me so it did its job. What really sucked is arai changed the cut outs on the shields just enough so I need to buy all new ones

Arai has a site you register on (http://www.araiamericas.com/default....id=59#/helmets) and create a ticket to send it back.

What do you guys think of two piece, full waist zip together suits for track days? I'm not bitching about the suit, I don't have a scratch or bruise on me. The gear did its job. But after I checked myself out, I found that I had ripped the jacket right off the pants while sliding on my back. In a longer crash, that could be pretty bad.

the foam might not be white where the impact was. In the Suomy I crashed in I can see where my head dented the foam but no discoloration. In the Scorpion I got a concussion wearing I can't see a single thing wrong with it. I cleaned off the grass marks and retired it.

I used to have one. I never crashed it but it was built well. Like anything its all about build quality. Some are better then others. I guess it coming apart where they connect either by zipper failure or stitching failure is always a possibility. If I were trying to use it for street and track I think Id go with the two piece. If its strictly track Id stick with a one piece.

Inspect it for any salvage parts like screws or the face shield perhaps even the liner to have a spare. Other than that toss it or make it into a display. General rule is once it hits the ground with you head in it toss it. From your description, it did the job it needed to. Helmets are single use items.

I've got 2 identical red Arais hanging on garage wall, concussions in both. conversation pieces now. FYI if Arai tests it and its NG they will not give it back.

If you hit hard enough to get a concussion, it's toast. I wouldn't bother sending it back to check out.

I'll just cut the strap out of it tonight, so it can be a toy for the kids.
Your right Ted, that helmet has fit loose this year. I knew it, and ignored it. I had to go down a size for my dirt helmet this year because it was loose also. I think my head shrunk. I'll stop by and see you guys soon. Not only do I need a helmet, but I need a new rubber end for the sliders I bought from you last week, I ground some of it off yesterday.

    Re: Inspecting helmet after crash

    Definitely come by.
There are good Arai and Shoei helmets available once we know your fit.
Plus you may be getting close to a cool track day discount bonus if you buy a new Arai.
Of course I keep extra slider pucks in stock too.
