I'm doing a host of maintenance on my SV gen 1 race bike. Carb rebuilds, air filter, various seals, wheel bearings, fluids and flushes, clutch replacement, etc.
One thing I'd like to do is the brakes. They have brand new pads but I think I'd like to rebuild the master and the calipers. Anywhere sell a good complete rebuild kit that comes with all the parts you need?
If not, curious what is the full list of oem parts I'd need. This is a supersport SV so I forget if I'm allowed to do a master upgrade but I'm open that idea instead if so...
Separate question, i've read some people saying you shouldnt use brake cleaner when doing internal brake part cleaning - is that right? What about just a water-based degreaser (I just got a tabletop parts washer)?
Thanks!

Yes, aftermarket master cylinders are allowed in lwss. (I run an Accosatto and have been very happy with it, but any MC of your choice will be an improvement over the stocker as long as it's not an OEM Nissin off a gsxr. Those things are totally hit or miss... usually miss)
I haven't had any issues w/ brake cleaner on internal parts, though it's not really necessary to use it on bits that aren't exposed to brake dust. Just make sure it's completely dried out before assembly.
Are you makin a return to LRRS?
You better fuckin be makin a return to LRRS...![]()

Cool - I don't really know shit about the 19x 18 number variants etc. but I can do some reading. Ideally there will be a short lever option so it fits inside the lever guards.
I never really intended to leave lrrs... just kinda hasn't worked out. But yeah will plan to race next year. Whether it's on this SV or maybe I'll get something else too - thinking motard maybe.
Any good source for caliper rebuild kits? Assume i'll want to do pistons, seals, etc. the whole shebang
Also probably want all fresh banjos, copper washers, etc. if I'm going to drain the system anyways. I'm a sucker for a "complete" kit and don't mind if it's a few bucks more.

I'll ask Steve where he was getting his bits. I don't think he went anywhere special but he rebuilt his system like 100 times over the past couple of years chasing a reoccurring "lever flaccidity" issue. He just couldn't get it to stay it hard. Giggity. He did eventually figure out the issue, though.

Regarding brake cleaner and internal bits, this mostly applies to rubber or non metal bits like seals etc. Story is that the brake cleaner can swell the material which in turn makes things have more resistance when moving which can cause pads to drag causing more heat yadda yadda yadda
Cleaning all the metal bits with it disassembled, or if you are replacing all the non metal bits anyway, with brake cleaner shouldn't be an issue. If you are doing a midseason caliper cleaning without taking everything apart then dunking your caliper into a small bucket with some not so harsh degreaser/cleaner and then rinsing clean afterwards with water is the way to go.
All Balls racing sells kits for almost everything on the SV; front and rear masters and calipers included. In my experience they are good quality, freely available (Rocky Mountain, ebay, even amazon), and priced reasonable.
I rebuilt my front master (2000 SV) using their kit.
I see they have gasket kits for things like the clutch cover too. I've always bought OE gaskets for that. Maybe OE gaskets are getting hard to come by? I don't know.
Standby for a headache bleeding the rear brake. I had a hell of a time getting the air out.
Ultrasonic washer does wonders. I use just water and a bit of simple green degreaser. Don't leave the aluminum parts in the cleaner for too long. Also using heat makes drying the parts afterwards is even easier. It won't do much for really caked on crap on the calipers though. If you are doing a full tear down and replacing or removing the rubber bits I'd use brake cleaner for that.

Pretty sure this is what Steve used:

Can confirm, was talking to Steve this weekend about this very kit. Apparently it works better than anything else he has tried, and the red rubber grease is key to that (probably). I'll be trying out the kit this winter too. I have a Nissin master on my SV and it's ok but not great, but it's not worse than the stock master.

Thanks guys. I did speak to steve who was helpful. I ordered the brakemasters stuff and it already showed up, and ordered a bunch of other stuff. I basically thought about if I should race this bike again and decided either way I wanted to make it right. I might get a supermoto in addition anywaysList of work I'm planning
Brembo 19 RCS w/ shorty lever and reservoir kit
New stainless superbike line set
Caliper rebuilds with brakemasters kits
Already have ~new vesrah pads
New RBF600
Rear brake bleed and reservoir delete
Carb rebuild - all seals etc as bowl was leaking
Clutch replacement
Chain and sprockets
All new wheel bearings (5 wheels)
New air filter (done)
Oil change, coolant flush, etc.
Possibly a new throttle kit with shorter throw (although i already did the r6 conversion) since I have a bad wrist and a shorter throw would help.
What else? Is there a water pump rebuild that's typically needed for these bikes? I know it's an issue on dirt bikes but maybe not these. Haven't ever touched it.
Fun shop stuff i got
Gearwrench tap and die kit
Parts washer and case of fluid
