Hi guys, my name is Ian and I'm new (again) to the boards. I used to cruise around on here a few years back but its been awhile. Didn't really feel like posting this in the introduction section...I like to break the rules and live life on the edge.
Anywho, I've been talking about getting a bike for about 5 years and I'm finally in the financial situation to do so. I'm going to get my permit (again) on Friday and take the MSF in a few weeks. I have my eye on a 2007 sv650 that is pre-owned. I'm excited to finally be doing this. I look forward to riding with you guys (and gals) soon. Cheers.
I'd get a bike before you get your permit. No sense in letting the X number of days you get your permit for run down while you don't have a bike. Gotta go to the DMV to register it, might as well do it all at one shot so you have more riding time.

SV is a good choice but if you don't have alot of money there are plenty of good bikes that you can find for much less money.![]()

Welcome back. An SV650 was my first and I just upgraded to an SV1000. Great bikes all around.

if you're not riding that SV up at Loudon then you're doing it wrong. Use all the power on the track wearing full gear.
An SV650 is an excellent starter bike. Don't know what kind of position you're going to want to be in, but I would recommend the SV650n as it will be much more comfortable for any type of riding (plus I'm a big fan of nakeds). But if you're looking to jump into a race replica anytime in the future, the S model would probably be a good way to get used to being in that position.
Not everyone is a track rider or rides at 10/10 all the time. I'm sure a lot of people here simply enjoy sport touring, like myself.

welcome
Welcome... back
I'll definitely be riding nekkid. I recently got a new job and I'm looking to finance a pre-owned bike. Looking at one right now for about 4k. A little more than I planned to spend on my first bike but at least it will be something I can hold onto for a few years.
An 07 sv650 for a little over 4k isn't a bad deal at all from a dealer. Sometimes its worth it to spend a little more up front. I was looking at 4-5 year old zx-6's for 5-6k . . they told me I could ride away with a brandy new one for 7k . . WTF how could i say no lol
Just make sure you get gear!! No seriously we will crucify you for any shorts and a t-shirt nonsense lol
Thats NESR for you. we are dicks but only cause we care lol

If not for the name "Ian" I'd be calling BS., or a new record post count intro thread.
As an aside, 4K cash for a first bike? If you have it to play with, enjoy it! Everyone else here will tell you:
1) you'll drop it so it's a waste of $
2) you'll never use all the power
3) buy an EX250 (or a hawk if Doc is talking)
Me, I take it differently. Can you afford to play with 4K? Apparently, or you wouldn't be in a cash available situation for a new (to you) bike. Fuck em. If you drop it light, bodywork is cheap and paint is reasonable. If you bin it, bodywork is reasonable and the rest is up to you.
Assuming you can afford to throw away 1500 (thinking 4K bike minus crash damage) have a goddamn blast! Welcome to the addiction.

Some will crucify. Others believe in natural selection.
Go on, ride in what you want. I'd rather another person actually ride than the gear nazi's scare them off.
That said, a suit (riding jacket and pants) will make you a LOT happier after an off than shorts and a t-shirt. Wrecked hands suck, gloves are nice. Broken ankles suck, hence riding boots.
I've suffered every injury mentioned and I still ride. Don't let the gear gestapo keep you off your bike, just understand you run the risk of more injury if not in gear. That's your call. And,Doc, you were that dude once too.
If asked, I always suggest the correct gear. Just don't let these gear nazi's rule your life and keep you off your bike. I have more street crashes than I'll ever care to admit, and they were all in BS/no gear. I'm lucky, I've seen a single crash cause more harm than I've ever suffered (on and off track combined)

seriously...I'm riding nekkid, dingleberries flapping in the breeze.
I think I would get bored with a 250 pretty fast. I would rather spend a little cake on something I'll keep for a few years.
Have I said 1 thing about gear in this thread?
I recently took a financial management class. Toys should be paid for in cash... Plenty of good bikes out there for $2000 or less.
