OK now that I have that out of the way ... as many on here will tell you I have owned many bikes in my short riding career (going on 7 years now - over 10 bikes). From a modded out Z1000, to an R1, a R6, a Bandit...the list goes on. When I first got into riding Neil (Expat) told me to buy an SV, I didn't listen. Last fall on a whim I bought an SV 650 to do two days at Jersey. Best motorcycle purchase I have ever made! I love the bike in every aspect, wish I had bought one years ago. Enough said!
SV's are ok...I'd never own one again. They SUCK for any sort of highway. I'd swear we were in a church by the way you guys are preaching...
I'd go as far as to say that the SV650 is one of the most boring motorcycles that I have ever ridden. Has no character. I'd rather ride an EX250.

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
SVs suck! there, I said it.
J/K so STFU!

Boring? I think these bikes have some of the most character out of any I have ever owned, and that's been a few now. I do agree with you though, not good for highway riding at all......well compared to other bikes that are better suited for it. Out of a good all round bike I think they do fantastically.
Back on subject. OP, I think you should look for a hypermotard. Fun bike around town but could also be ridden at the track if you desire.

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
SV's do everything well but nothing great... unless you mod the hell out of it with a specific purpose in mind.
For those donning their Sunday best to preach to him about power & crashing, I think you should all stuff a sock in it.

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
Any bike Smutty owns sucks. :D

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
Goes without saying!
But they sure do look good! :leghump:

With the bottom of your budget you could get one that's totally dialed.
I have a 2008 SV650S for sale soon. If the low price is objectionable, I'll charge you as much as he wants!:lmao:

In a pinch last year I took my street bike to the track because I had an issue with my gsxr the night before the track day and I still wanted to attend. It ended badly and I was just looking for suggestions for something I can ride on the street that will also be comfortable with a track day should the need arrive. I feel like I'm getting beat up here for wanting something more than an SV for daily use. I like the Sv and I wish I had one for my track bike but I'm not looking for one.
I, for one, am not beating up on you and I apologise if my posts are coming across that way. As I stated already, I could not care less about what you end up with. I'm simply asking you to consider your direction when it comes to taking this new bike to the track...something which sounds inevitable based on your posts.
If I sound preachy, that's fine with me. Personally I'd rather not have a rider bin any bike for any reason then end up reading about it 2 and 3 (or more) times.

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
I know what your saying. I definitatly have to be very cautious with whatever I have track or streetbike next time I see the track. I don't want anymore crash stories.

A hyper would be a good choice...another bike that I would have my eye on is the new FZ8...
And I would be curious to know what other bikes you have owned before the SV.

I gotta say, your advice in this thread is the complete opposite of what I would give. I'll just leave it at that, since these and most NESR discussions are pointless.

Kinda curious as to what your advice would be...sounds like the guy is looking for a nice looking bike with a little bit of power that sounds good and could be used on the track once in a blue moon.
-
Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
Hyper is a piece of shit, and you would not rather ride an ex250 than an sv.

That doesn't really sound like advice...
And the EX250 may not be any better than the SV, but it made my point.

I'll take that as your agreement to both points. Proceed.

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
My Advice to the OP is go buy a Bike, Do some research and buy what excites you.

As long as you agree that SV's suck...then sure.

As much as I don't want to, I have to agree with Awesome here. The SV has tons of character. You sure you didn't ride one when it got wet and was down to only one cylinder, Christian?
You seem to be the only one in this thread who thinks otherwise. It has much more "character" than an EX or my current Street Triple R, and that is saying a lot..
We are all entitled to our opinion. Hell, go out and buy that superbike that you want. Just please don't post about it and say later you should have got an SV.

I didn't say go buy a superbike...but something more capable would sure be nice. No the SV I owned ran mint and I had no complaints. Styling left a lot to be desired (first gen), and the FZ I ended up with does everything better. Just my opinion.

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
The FZ8 looks cool but a fellow had one at the New Jersey track days and felt it was severely hampered by the lack of adjustability in the suspension. Preload only in the rear, nothing at all in the front. That might be worth considering for both street and track duty.
-
Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
I think the FZ1 has more adjustability and they are usually avaialable at pretty decent prices.
-
Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
2001-2005 FZ1 had full adjustments front and rear
2006-current has preload front and rear, compression in one fork leg, rebound in the other and IIRC compression only in the rear
I fully agree that, on the newer versions, the suspension really hold the chassis back from being true performers.
-
Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
I'd really like a vtwin. But the fz1 had always caught my eye. I never thought they would be any sort of capable on a track. What about the fz6? is it similar? What's the issues with the hyper? I've read it's not great for the track but no one explains why. Would the S model be better?

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
Dude, buy a first-gen Aprilia Mille R (with Ohlins) and never look back. It'll keep you entertained for years and is definitely a comfortable bike for those above 6'. They're a little heavy but will feel light years ahead of your SS/SP. I owned a '03 Colin Edwards rep and if it weren't really going to be a FULL on track bike (I sold it to get an 848), I would have happily held onto it for just your reasons (street and track). Phenomenal machine, reliable as hell if unmolested and even the full Ohlins / OZ ones are CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP.
/thread.

Re: Looking for bike for street / trackdays
Someone tried to race one. It reportedly got wicked head shake everywhere. He finally binned it up by the treehouse and the bike left the track in a couple trash barrels.
