seriously people. i need to insure my bike asap. i'v paid over $1200 last yr and let it cancel a month ago. insurance company is Commerce and the agent is around my area.
my area is not a high rate. im sure i can do better somewhere else.
any recommendations?
Everyone's MA rates are supposed to be dropping quite a bit... even if you just wait and renew you should see it go down.
Kham, Lowell is an expensive area to insure bikes/cars. There are a lot of thefts in that area. That would be one reason your price is high. Also don't you have a ticket or two that has affected your step? Those with your zx-10 = high cost to insure.

I found out some interesting information. It looks like Commerce links your motorcycle step and car step together. I was under the impression that your motorcycle and car were two seperate things.Quote:

if you get a speeding ticket on your bike, it will affect both your car and bike insurance, juar likw id you are speeding while driving someone elses car, you are the operator, it goes on your record, what vehicle makes no difference
Just a quick clarification on how a step should have affected your insurance, if you had multiple policies, up until this point in time.
If you happen to be a "safe driver" and your step is less than a step 15 then all of your policies are subject to a "safe driver" discount. This discount is based on your SDIP rating number. When less than 15 there are certain percentages of certain sections of your policy that are given as a credit.
If you happen to be a driver who's SDIP rating has gotten to a point higher than 15 this will cause you to be surcharged by the insurance company due to your driving history. The insurance company can only surcharge you on one policy at a time. Therefore if you have two policies, 1 car and 1 bike, whichever policy is the more expensive policy will have your SDIP step assigned to it and the second policy, the cheaper one, will be assessed as a step 15 or "neutral step".
I don't know how the "new" way of handling the points will affect this but up until this point in MA this is the way the policies are handled.
I wound up doing a ton of research about this stuff when I was paying stupid amounts of money for my car and bike policies. Boy was I happy when I realized that the insurance company had been overcharging me for the last 4 years and that they had to give me a refund for the extra money they had charged. Took a while to get the check but I got it nonetheless.

ok listen up!
i just talked to the girl at the insurance agency. she doesn't know how the new system works yet but this is what she said. a new system just came out last week that uses points. a person with new license and no records starts off at 0 and the best driver point is 99. the SDIP system does not apply anymore. :dunno:

I visited my insurance agent this morning.
They said the new stuff is coming out in April or May, my policy is up for renewal in June and will show the new points system & rates then.
My step was at 14 when they made my policy last year, which was a $52 credit on the policy. It dropped to 12 later on but they won't lower the rate until you renew the policy. :(
Since we are all talking about different policies in the interest of being clear I paid $933 last year.
Breakdown:
BI to others - 20k/person, 40k/accident - $86
PIP - $8000/person - $16
BI caused by uninsured auto - $20k/person, 40k/accident - $15 (This is the minumum legal coverage)
Damage to others property - $100k/accident
Optional BI to others - $50k/person, 100k/accident - $57
Collision - $1000 deductible - $546!
Comprehensive - $500 deductible - $169
The collision is the killer but otherwise I'm carry higher then the minimum on a lot of stuff.
I'm going to seriously talk to the agent about dropping the collision when I renew the policy as I won't have the loan.
If the bike is worth $5000-6000 I'm not sure that $546 is worth it for collision in an accident that is my fault.
ISTR a discussion when I took out the policy, having a $500 deductible on collision was going to raise the collision a lot more, like maybe to $1000/yr.
is PIP optional?
a lawyer told me before a PIP for motorcycle is expensive and they wouldn't sell it to you.

Well based on my policy it's all gravy except collision.
If I drop Collision I'm probably going to be paying like $400.
I'm still not sure if I'm going to do that but obviously nothing else is expensive.
PIP is listed as compulsory on the policy but it doesn't say what the minimum is... but $16/yr makes it a "who cares" thing.

That was just commerce dragging it's ass, they haven't converted to the new stuff.
