Give the new crew running things a little time.. I'm an old fuckah, yall probably don't remember motorcycles of around 1978-1981. Speedometers were limited to 80MPH cars and bikes. That was the gas-saving drive 55 days. Joan Claybrook. She wanted inflatable systems around the rider on motorcycles for when they crash. Dutch Reagan came along and squashed all that nonsense, thank gawd, and then when Clinton was in there was a time when The V-Max, V-65 Sabres and Magnas and first big-block Ninjas came out that they started talking about mandated horsepower limits and/or speed-limiting governors on the bikes. Because after all, the "children" can't POSSIBLY handle all that power, right?
The manufacturers were concerned, anyway and of course, true to their greedy ways, that's when insurance companies started adding premiums for higher-pop bikes.

Mandating anything as a crutch stops advancement of a riders' skills, and in this case, allows riders a false luxury, a cushion, that tells them no matter what, just pull this lever right here (the brakes) and all your troubles will be solved. And that ain't the truth. Better you don't get too dependant on ABS so that you ride with the understanding that avoidance is usually the best strategy in any case. But to be undermined by a computer as a mandated "safety" device is nonsensical in the extreme.

    MHO.

My Van ABS has caused 1 accident and now has me looking for escape during hard braking situations.

The greatest life saving was the extra 1000 dollars on the sales price will discourage a lot of newbies from buying a motorcycle in the 1st place.

IF IF there was a simple system for front wheel only it would help newer riders.

yer memory is going bad and yer not even as old as me, speedos were limited to 85mph

and btw, 55 does save gas, lots of it, ya just can't get from here to there in a reasonable amount of time

I don't mind the idea of ABS (if it's switchable)as much as the mandatory airbags & seatbelts we have now,

Mandatory ABS is a form of fascism as far as I am concerned. Our government does not really care about our lives. They care more about the court of public opinion. ABS sound like a scary option to have on a bike as far as I am concerned. I realize that it may work for a hard stop, but I have never locked my front wheel other than in a stoppie with a double pull on the brake lever. This happened to me more on my Ninja 636 being that it was so light. Now for my ZX-14 I see no need. The back brake can be locked easily. That should be something all riders are aware of.

As for government limits I am against that as well. I do agree with the gentleman’s agreement that all street bikes will be limited to 300km/h or 186mi/h. this was something I had not put much thought into. After 180mi/h the oxygen is pulled from your helmet at a high rate. After minutes at this speed the rider could pass out without an oxygen supply.

Would front ABS make stoppies harder?

Not on a Duc. : ) (You can do stoppies with Ducati's ABS, but not BMWs...)

Re: Mandatory ABS on all bikes??

i was stationed out in the middle of no where.... yuma AZ, i owned a ZX-12R with several grand worth of goodies. i spent many minutes above 180 at a time and never passed out . i'm pretty sure thats just not true. besides, do you know how hard it is to find a place where you can actually do above 180 for a significant amount of time?

though i would rather not have mandatory ABS. yet i'm not opposed to ABS. i suppose i could live with the extra weight and added complexity as long as i didn't have to pay extra for it...and i could turn it off. it would deffinatly be handy in adverse conditions. though i can hover the rear during a hard stop in the dry and you just can't stop any harder than that ABS or not.
