    melted cover

i did something dumb last night. it was getting late and i wanted to go to bed, and i cover my bike every night because i have to park it on the street. i had just taken a ride around the block (that consisted of 15 mins of idling because i live in kenmore square and the red sox had just beat the twins). due to drowsiness or impatience or stupidity, i put the cover on right away and it melted a little bit on the header pipe. so, i patched the hole in the cover with some duct tape (redneck, but effective). because of the melting , i have a plastic/nylon/alien spew residue on my header pipe, how do i get it off? this morning i tried picking at it with my finger nail, but it won't come off that easy. i haven't started the bike up yet to see if it will get hot and gooey again to try to come off. any suggestions?

    Cold oven cleaner.
MAke sure pipes are cold, spray on, be mindful of over spray.
    Wipe clean in the morning.
Works well for boot scuffs on other sections of the exhaust as well.

i read in a magazine yesterday that the oven cleaner "Easy Off" applied to cold pipes will take off melted boot from exhaust. might work on your spot too. just make sure you pipes are cold or you might stain them more.

You can also try semichrome after you remove the big stuff. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. Yes I know this, and no it wasn't me, Just my bike.

Ooh, good tip.. I've got melted boot on the pipes of my 500. Tried goo-gone but that didn't help. Will have to try the Easy Off.

+1 on the easy off, been using this trick for years, works like a charm. Not too sure how it'll work on melted cover material, but definitely worth a shot...

    Re: melted cover

I bought a bike with pinstripping on it that I didn't want. I was told by a pin-striper to use ez-off to remove pinstriping then wash with soap and water. Worked like a charm. Hadn't thought to use it on pipes on my training bikes, but I'm gonna now! Great tip!!
