my neighbor has an '02 XR650R that was 'tarded up right then never ridden, only had 300mi. thing is super sweet, he LOVES it and paid way more than he should have at $6500. all the trick shit is on it though. its fast, sounds badass, goes anywhere within reason (i agree with all of markbvt points) and requires minimal maintenance. only issue is the suspension is a little soft for his weight but hes a big guy.

I have like 50/50 tires on my drz400S 21/18
I can lay it over as far as I legitimately want to go. I can never answer this question but I would really doubt that with 17's and "good" tires i would be leaning much farther. Contrary though I think my tires with miny knobs are a real soft compound so maybe not so bad as sticky street tires. The rear showing real wear in 1500 Miles.
I pose this... If you don't "scrape" things on a regular bike then motard conversion will be of dubious value...
I acknowledge a coolness factor but $$$$$$
Additionally I think 3 tire companies make street or 90/10 street tires in sizes that would fit.
I also have had no problems on the street with stock DRZ braking not even with aftermarket pads.
MY only complaint was with the seat and my ass pad or a Corbin 300 will fix that.

I must admit the "coolness" factor is playing a roll in my decision. I know I will need a more comfy seat after the 250x. Just how much more maintenance does a Drz400 need? Compared to an XR650.
There is a drastic difference between a street motard, and a true motard. I wouldnt be caught dead with a real one on the street, mainly cause I can barely keep it maintained well enough for racing.
doc the 400 and 650 will both be like non existant maint. compared to the 510s/550s

Maintenance is zero. I love it and if it falls down.. who cares. I havent taken it to a track,
I do get wind buffeted around 80mph, oil goes in the frame , kicks starting is a cool factor unless she dies in traffic, then you feel sort of awkward. On hot days in stop and go traffic she could overheat, people have added "fans" to the radiator.
You might even want to swap out the stator or rewind it to get more juice out of it.

not sure if you remember the SMJ member 'blowout' (Anthony from Brooklyn) but that's whos bike my neighbor bought. bike was put together really well. he's going to upgrade the seat for all-day duty as well, prob Renezco.
my SXV bump-stop seat on the other hand... OUCH. 45min and i need to stand.
About the same. Where you get into a lot more maintenance is the KTMs, Aprilias, any of the race-ready motards, etc. Just to give you an idea, my XRL needs an oil change every 2k miles and a valve adjustment every 4k (screw/locknut adjusters, so doing the adjustment takes about half an hour including taking the seat and tank off). That's it. It's been super-reliable, and it'll start easily even when it's 5 degrees out.
For whatever it's worth, if you feel like scraping together more money, there are a couple other really nice options, namely the Husky SM610 and BMW G650 Xmoto. Both make over 50hp and weigh about the same as an XRL.
But yeah, for $3k you could put together a nice street motard out of a DR-Z or XR.
By the way, everyone who's complaining about their seats: get your seat redone by Renazco Racing. Best dual-sport/dirt/motard seats in the business, yet cheaper than a Corbin.
