In the past corner workers got treated pretty well at Indy from what I recall.
I read that somewhere too. Looked like most were reporting never hearing back from that contact.
At last years MotoGP in Austin one of the guys we were with did on day as a corner worker and got the other 2 days as an open pass. I think the only thing he had to do was make the orientation. It was a pretty good deal. The video he posted from his phone was as close as you could get (the edge of the track).
